I got my first phone call in July 2009, telling me my husband had, two years earlier, agreed to a two year internet business directory listing, and now it was time to pay. Tired, and unaware at the time of this scam, after explaining I couldn't afford the $700 they asked, I made the mistake of agreeing on tape to pay a 'reduced' fee of $399. They said when I got the invoice and paid it the account would be closed.

Upon thinking about it later I realized it had to be a scam. They had my husband's name wrong, he is not part of my business and would never agree to anything without my approval, and finally, at the time the original alleged agreement took place he was recovering from a stroke, and could barely talk or walk or think. He certainly wasn't answering phone calls.

When I confronted them, demanding to hear the alleged tape of the original agreement, the service rep smugly told me that now that they had me on tape agreeing to pay they didn't have to prove anything, and refused to play the (non-existent) tape.

I have submitted online complaints to the FTC and BBB, and tomorrow my official complaint to the NY AG office goes in the mail. Unfortunately, slimes that they are, these scammers will probably just disappear and reappear under a new name, and more naive business owners will get caught in their web.

I followed the information I found here and in other sites, as to dealing with these scams; complaints to the BBB, FTC and AG office. The next call came just after I started the process, so I just said I was too busy to talk. Another message appeared on my answering machine, still too soon, so I just deleted it. Today I got another call, and when he asked if he could expect payment this week I just said 'No' and hung up. Sure enough a minute later the phone rang and I let it go to the machine and just listened as he tried to sound threatening, then I picked up the phone and told him I had already reported his scamming firm and he would never see a dime out of me. He tried again to bluster that "I" was out of line, and to threaten action, and I just firmly (not even loudly) told him to shut up, and hung up. Five minutes later I got another call on the machine - a different voice, sort of sad - like he was trying to lay a guilt trip - saying that 'I' was the one who had made the original agreement (totally reversing their original line of attack) but that in the light of my 'bad attitude' they were closing my account and I wouldn't hear from them again.

It just proves that if you have ther facts, don't give in to their BS, and go through the right channels you cannot be taken for a ride! Thanks Ripoff Report!!!
