We bought the magic jack about a year ago. For a year, it worked fine and we had no problems. Then, out of the blue, it started acting crazy. When calls would come in, the phone wouldn't ring. The only way we knew someone had called was by checking the caller ID on the magic jack box on the computer. We talked to customer service about this (Which by the way is chat only. No phone number to call, so it's extremely annoying.) and they said we had to get a new phone to test with the magic jack device and if it still didn't work they would issue a replacement. We got another phone, and it still did the same thing. Shortly after this, the magic jack also stopped letting calls come in, or us call out, and would not connect to the internet. It also started saying we had an unpaid balance on our account. My husband tried to pay for another year, thinking that maybe it was time to renew. This did not fix the problem, and it still said we had an unpaid balance. We talked to customer service again, and this time they tried to say our computer was the problem. We have a mac mini which has always worked perfectly. We have no problem with our internet connection either. It was obvious to us that the magic jack was the problem... not our phone, computer, internet, etc.

After going around with them for about 2 hours and still not getting any real help, they then started claiming that we had a $46 charge on our account from when we first got the magic jack. They claimed that we had never paid for it, and that when we initially bought it that they somehow just did a hold on that money in our account and it never went through. This was obviously bogus, because it DID go through on our account, we had already had phone service for a year with no mention of this charge, and every time we logged in to our magic jack account online it never mentioned any charge. When my husband went to pay for the additional year, it never told him we owed any money.

We kept telling them that this was wrong, and that we had paid, that it was taken out of our account, and that we would not pay for something we had already paid for. We kept asking them why it had never showed up until now, and why we were able to have phone service for a year if we'd never paid, and why it showed up on our credit card statement, but they kept just saying the same thing and insisting that we pay or they wouldn't do anything. Finally we were just like, whatever, and told them we were taking our business elsewhere.
We are out the extra $20 we paid for the additional year, but at least it wasn't more than that. Magic jack is a huge rip off.
