Been a customer with MBNA for years. Until recently,I had 12.99% interest rate. They elected to increase this to 19.99%. When I questioned, it was disclosed by them that I had become a credit risk. I pay my debts on time, and the amounts owed, wages never been garnished, never bankrupt and these people "dogged" me out.
I do not recommend this bank........Those of you who use them need to be aware.....

#2 UPDATE EX-employee responds
MBNA INTEREST RATES... I don't like they way shove credit cards down people's throats.

I worked at MBNA for a decent amount of time. I did tele-sales at the Aliso Viejo, California Branch. Which is the only west coast office. About 150-200 telemarketers work there to this day. The computers there are automatic dialers and we reach about 40,000 current MBNA customers or Potential customer, "LEADS" on the average day.
Alot of times we would sell the 5.9% FIXED rate card to people with good credit scores or current customers that don't have a rate that low to LURE THEM INTO GETTING ANOTHER LINE OF CREDIT. Obviously its all "Upon Approval" if they get the unsecured line of credit or not, and if they get a rate that low."
As the United States Prime rate goes up, MBNA increases the fixed rate credit cards to correspond to that. Alot of people that are on the low rate fixed will get hiked up a few percent over the next few years as the prime rate continues to increase.
Overall with my experience working at MBNA. I would never own an MBNA credit card.
I don't like they way shove credit cards down people's throats. Be careful though. THEY ARE A GIANT MARKETING COMPANY. ALL THE BUSINESS THEY HAVE MADE SO FAR IS BASICALLY FROM WORD OF MOUTH AND MARKETING. THEY NEVER ADVERTISE ON TV.
Last I heard they are going to start changing there image and begin to advertise to reach new clients. MBNA has over 5000+ affinity cards. If your a AAA customer for example you will probably be solicited or get solicited for the AAA platinum plus visa that gives you UP to 5% cashback on your gas purchases.
When they say UP to it means you get 2% back but if you use your card 60% of it on non-gas related purchases you'll get the full 5%. Which hardly anybody does to be honest. Alot of the employee's at MBNA are so narrow minded and "dumb."
Its amazing to me how the place operates so smoothly. Perhaps its because we don't get to see all the lawsuits they have going against them. Anyhow I'm getting off topic. Bottom line the best credit card company's in my opinion are CITI BANK, AMEX, AT&T Universal, and CHASE.

Ricco's Comments

1. I had two different accounts with MBNA, paid them on time, and both times they made life difficult for me for months after the accounts were paid in full.
2. In the competitive credit card and consumer loan industries, low rates are what attract customers.
3. When some companies sign you up at a certain rate, they already program their systems to increase your rate at a given time. When you call and scream, they'll tell you they no longer offer that rate, or you no longer qualify for the lower rate. Often they make the excuse that your credit score has changed.
4. If you don't want to be screwed, stay away from MBNA, Capital One, Providian, Direct Merchants, and Fleet. They all play the same miserable games. In fact, I know of one case in which a senior officer of Fleet left to run Providian.
