Merrick Bank claims I was late because I added and additional payment of $300.00 on an account that had a balance of $382.85. Of the remaining balance of $82.85, I was billed $70.00 (twice normal of the regular $35.000 because the extra payment of $300.00 was recieved before the next bill came out, they claimed I was late!
Time line: Prior to Nov. 2014 card had 0.00 bal, then used. 12/2014, billed $35.00, paid $100.00 leaving balance of $382.85. 01/28/15, $300.00 paid towards balance. Payment arrives prior to bill being sent out, Merrick files my payment as "late" and doubles my $35.00 payment to $70.00, however the bill states the $70.00 is not due until 03/23/2015.
My "Go-Score" drops from 734 to 722 for paying a day or two EARLY by my credit union's web site. Now I have paid the balancei n full, printed out complease copies in the event the state attorney and credit unions will need them once I file a complaint with them.
I will keep a zero balance and lock the card away, as cancelling the card may have a negitive effect on my FICO score. Beware, the phone help at Merrick Bank is hostle, mean and sassy, espaecially Malinda that claims to work out of NY state.

When I worked at Amex I had customers do this often, you paid while you were at the tail end of the previous billing cycle and did not make a payment by the due date once the cycle closed because you thought the $300 was paid on time.
Fair enough, it's an easy mistake. I would have explained the billing cycle to you so you understood what happened and given you a courtesy adjustment on the fee. That way you'd know what happened and why the fee appeared and more importantly how to avoid it in the future. Merrick bank doesn't seem to operate with customer retention in mind if you ask me. But then again their target demographic are people with terrible credit which explains their insane interest rates.

Your minimum payment due on 1/23 incurred a $35 late fee because it was late. It appears you failed to pay the minimum due by 2/23, so you incurred an additional $35 late fee.
For some reason you think the January payment was early because it was received prior to the next bill date. You are incorrect. It was late. Deal with it.
