First, I love the entertainment of the video game industry since Atari 2600. This is a billion dollar industry. Game units popularity over the years are based on many aspects. But the most important aspect to me is "just plug it in and play". I was lucky enough to purchase the Xbox 360 the day it came out. But was lucky enough to just get the core system.

Recently I purchased the harddrive to access (to play) the older Xbox games (first harddrive I purchased did'nt work and had to return for another unit that same day, real nice). But found out I could only play Halo and Halo 2 (best games ever made) WITHOUT GOING ONLINE TO DOWNLOAD A PROGRAM to access other regular Xbox games. It took hours to find out its not easy for me to access these programs. Needless to say I still don't have the access to older games and never knew how hard it would or could be. The harddrive is useless without joining a membership and spending time downloading and reseaching what games will work anyways.

For someone who is alert about gaming as me, Microsoft never stated the difficulty playing Xbox games on their new 360 unit. Just to say, with the harddrive, play regular Xbox games. Where's the fine print? I understand that millions of people are happy and should be. But I am very disapointed. I was a true fan of Xbox but losing faith of their misrepresentation. This system should of waited to be sold in stores. The games out now will get old real fast with few titles coming out soon. Time will tell. Please feel free help me understand this matter if anyone has the same problems.

Has anyone but me ever tried this trick?

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

Don't buy the stuff when it first comes out. Wait about 6 months to a year, and the prices drop dramatically. Also, the bugs are worked out during this time, so you end up getting a better unit for less money.

I know everyone wants the latest and greatest, but think about it. This is a game console. You lived how many years without it? You can wait a little longer.

You think $400 is expensive PS3 to be priced at $500

Love how the xbox bashers come in and state" that's why you should just wait for hte ps3"

PS3 will be priced at $500 when it debuts. $100 more than the Premium system of the xbox 360 and they haven't even stated fully what its capable of doing (backward compatibility is still an issue).

All systems will have their issues, on their first run (which is why you should just wait a year anyway). The Xbox is still supported and will be supported over the next year. I can remembe the "overheating" problem of hte first generation PlayStations (and the "workaroudn" was to turn your game console completely upside down).

I own every game console made (yes, I still have a collecovision sitting in my closet) and have no allegiance to any particular console or company; but know that its never wise to buy the first generation of anything that is made. Cars, applilances, tv's, bikes, dvd players etc.

PS 3 will have problems as well

Actually Sean, the PS3 WILL have a hard drive, which I am sure willbe used to store programming thathelps with the compatibility option. And the problems with the first generation XBox 360's are similar to a lot of first generation gaming systems. I remember when the PS2 came out there wasall kinds of problems. So one can assume the PS3 will have problems as well.

Thats why you wait for the PS3

AUTHOR: Sean - (U.S.A.)

Thanks for the report Kevin. I was actually thinking about getting the xbox 360, then heard a lot of negative feedback from the first releases. I also was trying to figure out why I'd want to spend over $400 just to play halo 2. I didn't know that the xbox 360 wasn't completely backward compatible. So, I figured I'll just get the PS3 since it's backward compatible all the way to the PS1, and you don't need a hard drive in order to do this.

A 5 second search...

Would have revealed all your answers, and straight from Microsoft. Researching uneccessarily, since it was straigth from the "horses' mouth (via their xbox.com website)

www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backwardcompatibilitygameslist.htm

Lists all the games that have been approved by Microsoft to run on the Xbox 360.

This list has been up on their official website since October, and has been updated since.

As for Microsoft, all of their advertisements have stated that SOME Xbox games can be played on the Xbox 360. And for information on what games that can be played, to visit their Xbox.com website.

this is a quote from their advertisement:
"Along with storing files, the hard drive will make the Xbox 360 backward-compatible with part of the existing Xbox game library."

Part of the existing Xbox Game Library.

Unless you've been living in a hole for the last year, and you claim to be an "avid" game player, you'd wonder why these things, that have been featured in the media online for the past year, would escape your notice.

A quick search on Google for the terms xbox 360 compatibility

Brought up the Xbox.com website as the FIRST result.
