I hired William Lovell, owner of Wyse Telemarketing through Elance, to make sales calls for an emerging technology program. He said he wanted to work outside of Elance so he wouldn’t have to pay any fees.

At the beginning of the relationship, I asked for 3 things:

  1. Provide at least 3 references that I could contact to understand the quality of the service he was to provide.
  2. Use a CRM that would allow both of us to track calls and prospect interest.
  3. Allow me to listen in on calls that he made to prospective clients.

References were never provided.

Mr. Lovell said he was going to create an account with a CRM service that he had used in the past. After several weeks, he said he was having problems with the CRM and would find a replacement. In the interim, he was going to send me his notes on the prospects he had contacted. Weeks passed, but no prospect notes were ever received.

Although he said his phone system did not have 3-way capability, it strains credibility to imagine a professional telemarketer not having that capacity.

At the beginning of the project, we discussed the likely sales closure rate. Because of the program I was promoting, he felt a closure rate of between 1 ½ to 3% was a conservative estimate. During the first month of the campaign, he estimated that he had contacted over 1200 prospects. If that were true, there should have been at least 18 sales. Yet, not only were there no sales, but not even one demo had been scheduled. That begs the question, were any calls ever made?

After a month with no results, Mr. Lovell was informed that our relationship would be terminated unless he provided the three things he agreed to at the beginning of the campaign. Not having heard from him in the last several weeks, one can only assume that he has no intensions of honoring his agreement.
