My story is simple...
I called to be entered into the "million dollar sweepstakes" (is there even one?) and upon being asked several questions, before I knew it the sales person I was speaking to was transferring me to her manager to "verify" my entry in the sweepstakes.

The manager who got onto the phone next told me she needed my visa card account number to verify that I was indeed a cardholder. This is when I tried to end the call by saying, "Oh, actually I didn't know this involved any sort of payment. My card is maxxed out and I can't even use it right now, but thank you anyway."

Immediately the manager said, "Oh but there isn't actually going to be any charges to the card, again, this is just to verify you are actually a cardholder.

A few days later I had a $100 something charge on my Visa which caused me to go over my credit limit and get charged an additional $35. I immediately called National Scam Exchange in tears and talked to a guy who told me he could get the charge off my credit card but that he'd then immediately need another form of payment---like a check-by-phone. I reluctantly agreed.

Now I have a letter sitting in front of me from NSA or North Shore Agency Inc for $184.44. I make $9/hour and don't have $185 bucks to pay for something I NEVER ORDERED. What's more, is when I called NME to ask them why I was sent to a collection agency, the guy on the phone told me I only owed them $152. So where did North Shore get $184.44???

Please advise me! How do I get these people to leave me alone? Do I have to pay them? Does the Credit Bureau take into consideration that this company uses unethical business tactics to rope people into buying things they didn't agree to and therefore it won't hurt your credit as much if NME appears as a "collection account" on your credit report?

I am so upset with myself that I made that call in the first place and now somehow owe these people money. I'm worried that my credit is in jeopardy if I don't pay; and I'm also worried that they have information on me that could aid them in charging me even more money.

Could someone please contact me with some information?

talking to one of the more unethical employees in verification, they identify themselves as Supervisors

AUTHOR: Greg - (U.S.A.)

I am sorry to hear about your experience Marie.

Unfortunately, inside this company making sales is very important. Employees are paid commission for the percentage of sales to calls and amount of money captured on a credit card. This kind of incentive makes some employees very unethical and agressive. The company tolerates these employees because they generate huge volumes of sales. The sales auditing (QD) department routinely overlooks the violations of high producing employees.

Oddly, as one of the more ethical employees in this company, I rarely if ever make a commission check and only collect the base hourly pay, between $7.50 and $9.00 depending on which department I am in, I have been in a few.

What this means is you unfortunately talking to one of the more unethical employees in verification, they identify themselves as Supervisors on the transfer. If the person you spoke to did in fact state your credit card would not be charged they "lied". You need to call the company daily until you get an agent who agrees to cancel the account.

Forget the collection agency and call National Magazine Exchange directly, its 1-800-508-6314 or 1-800-235-3630

Or you could write them a letter:

Special Data Processing dba National Magazine Exchange
16120 US HWY 19 N
Clearwater, FL 33764

If you want a job there its 1-888-737-4473. Joking.

Hi Melissa,
What happened to you is really wrong.
When you called NME they should have told you that you were being recorded. So you should try retrieving that tape or recording they have. So if they DID say something like " there is not going to be any charges on your card" or something like that you should be able to do something about it.

It is just a suggestion. i am currently working there but that i know of we do not do anything like that ( charging people's cards if they dont agree to buy the magazines) but if someone DID that is totally wrong and the company i does not train us to do so.

I want to wish you the best of luck in your case melissa and i am truly sorry for waht happened to you, i hope you can sort things out in the best ways.

sincerely,
