I am selling my home in FL and relocating to IN. I put a down payment of over $1,800 to the movers. That same day I found out that my home may not sell at this time. So I imediatly called the company to let them know I may need to cancel. I was told at that time this was not a problem that I could cancel at any time and get my deposit refunded. I was anaware at that time that less than 10 days later the buyer would back out of our contract on the house, so I was told to leave the date open, and when I was called to schedule pick-up let them know of the situation. I did as I was told. Later, I recieved a call to schedule pick up time and I told them it would be delayed. So they rescheduled me for a later date. about 5 days prior to the supossed move they called to make sure the date was ok. I told them at that time I was not sure what the person buying my house was doing and I couldn't give them a date. I was told agian that it wasn't a problem I could cancel and still get my deposit back.

The next day I find out that the buyer backed out and I called the moving co. as soon as I could. The day after I left a message with the co. I was called back by the person who had set up my order and he tells me he would get my refund. (that was on Friday) I called the same guy back on Monday he is still saying that I will get my refund. Today, Tuesday I couldn't get in touch with him but I did speak to customer service and they informed me I was not eligble for a refund!! I was apparently supposed to cancel within 5 days of the move date.. I did not have a set move date!! I spoke to a supervisor she said I was to cancel 5 days prior to the first move date, however I first put the deposit down only 5 days before the 1st move date.. And I did call to see if I needed to cancel that day and I was told no I could cancel whenever I found out for sure what was going on and still could get the refund!!

Cancelling your deposit

AUTHOR: Sharon - (U.S.A.)

If you paid by credit card, dispute the charges. Name the person that repeatedly told you the deposit was refundable, even on the fifth day before the contracted pick-up date. They will of course say this person didn't say that, or that they were mistaken, etc.

Be firm and do not let them win.
