I was using Craigs list to search for some jobs as a new grad knowing that some of them might be scams. I saw that a managerial training program posted that paid $19 an hour. I previously had an internship that paid that much therefore it didn't seem too out of the ordinary, however, with today's market I should have been more weary.

I called and within ten minutes - and without asking any legitimate questions - they had set me up for an interview. Patricia was the name of the lady who set up my interview. She informed me I would need to bring a resume, drivers license, and $50 CASH OR MONEY ORDER to the interview. That seemed to be a big red flag so I started asking quesitons about the position and the company. She couldn't answer any of my questions and hardly knew what she was talking about.

As soon as I got off the phone I decided to research the company call "New Option Resourcs". I searched the internet for awhile and couldn't find any companies with this specific name. Normally, it is not too hard to find a company (even very small firms) with just 3-5 minutes of internet research. One of the first links that came up was a Rip Off Report about New Option Resources being an employment Scam.

The article that I read said the guy thought it was a scam too, but actually wanted to check it out for himself. He said as soon as he walked into the door for his interview they asked for the money, driver's license, etc. He said the room was filled with cheap furniture and didn't feel right. He refused to give the money and asked if he could do it at the end of his interview. They hesitated, but let him do it. By the way, when they set you up with the interview they tell you that if you are hired you get the money deposit back. Sounds like a set up to take the money and not hire anyone to make a profit on the "deposit for machinery you will be using".

The guy said his interviewer could sense he was on to the company and kicked him out cussing at him while leaving. He made they shredded the copy of his documents.

I had an interview set up without showing barely any interest. After reading the article I decided not to go therefore "missing" my interview. Patricia called me the same day I had an interview scheduled and proceeded to yell at me on the phone for not showing up to my interview. A legitimate company wouldn't even go back and follow up with the candidate knowing they had no interest if they didn't show up. I told her I didn't feel comfortable with the comapny and especially how they asked for $50 cash or money order. I said I researched the company and didn't find out good information. Then I told her I didn't show because the company did not seem to be legitimate. (That pissed her off).

She proceeded to tell me the company was legitimate, raised her voice at me telling me I needed to reconsider and be more courteous next time. I informed her I had a family that worked for the Federal Government and could investigate a company like this in an instant and have them in the whole and she hung up on me.

Legitimate company? I think not. If they were, she would have transferred me to Human Resources to discuss the legality.
