I saw other postings and experienced the same problems.
I bought a new FE-210 Olympus camera for $150. First weekend using it it broke. It was never dropped, but it was used while hiking. I sent it in for warranty covered repair/replacement and was told it was a total loss and not covered by the warranty.
Why would Olympus even want to offer such a product? I have two Olympus Pen-D cameras from the 1950's that have been around the world and still work, that's why I trusted the Olympus name. But, this is just ridiculous. A new camera can't stand-up to normal wear in tear for a weekend?
Now, I not only lost my $150 + taxes, I also am stuck with a $50 xd card, not usable in any other brand.
One would think they would go out of their way to try and accomodate customers, after all, they could replace the camera at their cost for probably $50. At least that way no one loses out, and yet they maintain somewhat of a reputation.
I'm still in the market for a camera, but a lifetime of goodwill and belief in the quality of their products is down the drain.
This seems like the typical case of a venerable firm throwing away its reputation in order to chase the quick buck.

My Experience as a Camera Salesperson

I have been working for Ritz Camera in Pennsylvania for six years now (since May, 2002). When I was hired, Ritz was just making a deal to discontinue carrying Olympus cameras.
About two years ago (maybe three), we started carrying Olympus again after we began phasing out our Kodak cameras (another brand I would not recommend). Once we began carrying the Olympus cameras, I was not impressed with their quality or even their look or feel. I do not promote them for several reasons.
The xD memory usage is incompatible with several other products (digital photo frames in some cases)
The cameras do not feel of solid construction unless you purchase one of the water/shockproof cameras (note that these are only good for 5ft of height and 3ft of water)
The cameras, in my experience, are sent back for repair much more often than most other models. My best luck has been with Canon (personally and professionally) and Nikon (professionally). Sony and Casio also have solid cameras, as does Panasonic.
