This place almost killed. I have Kaiser insurance, so I went to Kaisers urgent care facility. I had a bowel obstruction and upon examination of the Dr. I was told that I needed a CT scan and bloodwork. Unfortunately, their CT was broken, so they wanted to send me via ambulance to Palomar Medical Center. I couldnt go by ambulance because I had my 28 year old severly autist son with me and didnt have anyone to come and get him. The Dr. at Kaiser told me that it was very important that I went by ambulance because it could rupture and become life threatening at any moment. I had no choice, so I drove myself to Palomar.

At Palomar I was told that I needed to go to the ER. Once there, I expected to get the scan immediately because Kaiser is signed with Palomar. Instead, even after explaining "everything" to the intakle nurses, I had to wait over an hour to be called into the Triage center. Once there I again explained to the nurse that I was sent there by Kaiser for a CT scan and bloodwork due to a bowel obstruction. The nurse behaved as though doing the job she gets paid for was an inconvenience to her and stated "We have our own Doctors and they will examine you to decide what we should do." After three days of great pain and a fourth day spent in waiting rooms with my son, who was reaching the meltdown stage, I got up and left. I had to get home to give my son his insulin and behavior medications.

Kaiser has no continuation of care and Palomar treats everyone in the ER as though they have a cold or flu. I could have died waiting for them to get around to helping me and no-one was interested in the fact that I had been sent by a board certified Doctor with a medical condition that could could cost me my life and would have resulted in a very serios situation without care. Fortunately, I dodged the bullet so to speak, but I was very sick for the next week.

This is medical care at its worst. I was surprised to find that others had died due to this lack of attention. I intend to take this grievance to the state, as well as the local news media, in the hopes that it will help prevent this happening to others and to do what I can to raise public awareness on this subject.

And, to add insult to injury, I received a bill for $477 without even being seen by a doctor.

You could have....but

AUTHOR: Robert - (USA)

Yes you could have died because of this.  But then again you could have died in a car accident going from Kaiser to Palomar.  The fact is though you did not.  No I am not making light of this, but let's look at exactly what happened here.  And how much may be a legitimate complaint and how much is a bit of an exaggeration.

First of all your report is on Palomar.  Where is your report on Kaiser who's ineffective equipment started this?

You state that you couldn't leave your 28 year old Autistic son on his own.  Okay, so if you went to the urgent care facility exactly what were you going to do if they told you immediate surgury was required and had you on an operating table in 20 minutes?  Remember your later complaint was that you had to leave because you didn't have your son's insulin.

Now first off I know several diabetics and none leave home without this.  But that not withstanding there is something else going on.  Remember why you were there?  You were there because the other doctor basically gave you what could be minutes to live because of this obstruction.

Had you gone by ambulance your situation would probably have been deamed a bit more serious.  ER's see people based on priority not when you arrive.  So someone who comes in by ambulance is going to be seen as being a bit more "critical".  You were able to drive yourself there..right?  At the very least why didn't this "Board Certified doctor" call them and let them know you were coming?

You say you were there an hour.  So do you know if you were seen before others?  Then when you are finally starting to be seen you just get up and leave???  What.....

Then in the end let us not forget...even though you were told by this other doctor you could die any moment if you don't get care, you still decided to leave and apparently suffer through what ever you had for the next week.  That pretty much makes a lot of people think...Ummm...so just how serious was this.  As you failed to mention anything about going back to ANY medicial facility or what the end diagnosis/treatment actually was.

In all reality unless you have some huge "smoking gun" and not trying to "play up" your story.  It sounds like your bigger complaint is with the original doctor who set you off down this path.
