PayPal, EBay Planned Boycott of EBay Feb. 18-25 - Upcoming policy changes only benefit the rich Internet

A one week boycott will mean virtually nothing. It needs to be at least a month boycott. I really don't think that many people make their livelyhood on eBay but more suplimental income as it would be easy to go to a regular job and then process their eBay stuff later.

To Big Sam:

Do you realize that eBay is no longer satisfied with raising their flat fees but instead are asking for a greater and greater percentage of sales? For example, FVF (final value fees) for auction style listings will increase from 5.25 percent to 8.75 percent for items under $25. Store item remittance to eBay will increase from 10 percent to 12 percent. I remember when store percentages were 5 percent, so now they have doubled? In less than 3 years?

eBay admits their profits have been "flat" for previous quarters. The numerous promotions they have launched over the past months (free and/or reduced listings for almost the entire months of November and December -- their glory months) are a good indication of their struggle to meet projections.

I guess what really intrigues me most about your post is your attack on my eBay transactions when you have absolutely no idea who I am on eBay or how successful I am. Actually, I have been a member of eBay for over 10 years. I manage a number of accounts, some PowerSeller accounts and some not. I was a member of X.com (pre PayPal) so I have good knowledge of eBay and Paypal history. Until now the service has allowed me to contribute to family income while staying at home with our children. It has been a wonderful cottage industry until now.

Is the boycott a joke? I don't know. I have been through many calls for boycott over the years, but this is the first I have seen any national media attention to the process. I find that interesting.

Those disintereted in continuing affiliation with eBay have many alternatives beyond the boycott. A Google auction alternative is in the works. Will it be any better? Who knows? Possibly it is now Yahoo's auction site time to benefit.

Etsy is also a growing alternative if you sell hand crafted items (as I do through some of my managed eBay profiles) In addition there are a number of private sales organizations to sell. Yahoo has a varied and diverse set of groups created specifically for selling privately without fees and with seller control. These are all venues I have been exploring and will continue to explore. I am sure there are more.

So is this dramz? I don't think so. Your opinion is of course your opinion.

No information as to WHAT specifically is so bad about whatever these changes might be.

FYI, the boycott that was to begin on February 18th was to begin February 18th 2005 (three years ago.)

Your a tad behind the times.

This so-called "boycott" you speak of is a joke. Perhaps you should not be on ebay or use the internet or anything that pertains to business & numbers.

Recalculate your numbers, rethink the situation & maybe perhaps view this as positive for ebay, customers & buyers/sellers.

We have enough drama in this world, stop the music.
