I have had a PeoplePC landline account since around 2005.  Up until a few months ago I was satisfied with their service.  Then I started getting e-mails claiming to be from PeoplePC, asking for information that PeoplePC already had.  Each time, I called PeoplePC and reported the problem.  Their response was that I should not answer these e-mails and to report them as spam and to not give out information on line.  I told them that I did not do that, that the reason I was calling them was to inform them that there was a problem and that I wanted to know what they were doing about it.

At first the spam e-mails were quite obvious, especially when they arrived in my suspect e-mail box (which PeoplePC claims they never use for legitimate communication).  Lately, however, they have become much more sophisticated and harder to distinguish from the real thing.  Again and again I contacted PeoplePC and told them "YOU have a problem.  Someone is stealing your identity and it is not enough to tell me to not open these things.  You need to be proactive and inform your customers that there has been a security breach instead of waiting for them to call you.  Because I can no longer trust that any communications claiming to be from PeoplePC are actually from PeoplePC."

PeoplePC's response has been that this is a problem plaguing all ISP's across the board.  If so, I haven't heard my friends, neighbors or coworkers mention this about their ISP's.  I have had friends who have had their identity stolen.  However, as I tried in vain to explain to PeoplePC, it is not MY identity that has been stolen (as far as I know) but THEIRS.

I am in the process of looking for a new ISP and from some of the other comments I have read it sounds like I may have trouble cancelling.  I want to warn all prospective and current PeoplePC customers that there has been a breach of security at PeoplePC which it is not informing its customers about and that people should beware.
