I have an all wheel drive Dodge Stealth. I took my lovely car into pep boys to have a clutch replaced. After them having my car for a week I had to bring them an owners manual because they somehow got the clutch put back together wrong. I should have known then that my car was in the wrong hands.

Two more weeks go by before they finally tell me that my car is ready. I drive my car out of Pep Boys and get to my street. My car starts grinding really loud and will only go in reverse.

I pushed the car the rest of the way down the street and called Pep boys. The manager was conveniently unavailable. so I left a message for him to call me back and prceded to check out the car myself.

Pep boys promised an inspection, but my car had no fluids in it at all. No transmission fluid, no oil, the washer fluid was even gone. All of these things were full when I brought my car in.
A
fter getting the run around for a few days I decided to stop in to Pep Boys. The manager tells me that its too bad because I already took posetion of the car and procedes to call the police on me. I have called lawyers who are telling me that I have to pay to fix the car before I can sue and I can not afford the $3000 it will cost me to have the transmission and transfer case rebuilt.

My wife can't go to work and the insurance person they sent out says that Pep Boys is not liable. I have had a mechanic tell me in writing that they are. I do not know what to do because I got ripped off big time!

Pep Boys will no own up to anything..

AUTHOR: Ward107 - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, November 25, 2008

I have had some very frustrating issues with Pep Boys Morse road in columbus. I had my vehicle taken in to have it inspected because of a rear end brake issue due to service that was completed that day... Well sort of anyhow... I had taken it in to get a lower ball joint replaced that was warented with a lifetime waratee for the part, I oaid 475.00 in labor.I had told him that they had just repaired them not even 40,000.00 miles ago and the factory ones had lasted 140,000.00. The bill to replace them was 878.00 the first round. I had been driving it down interstae 71 S and I heard a huge Bang from the rear> I had thought mabe a blow out, so I went to put the brakes on and the pedal went to the floor, I now had a 3/4 ton extended van with out any breaks. I had finnaly gotten the vehicle to a stop and called the service department the manager to let them know the vehicle messed up and the breaks went out.I had regained pedal After pumping the brakes. I explained to the service dept I had a very important customer appointment I was already late for and I would just take back roads there and return to them as soon as that was taken care of. I had left it in their care for the night around noon. The service manager had called me and told me there findings were'nt anything at all. He stated that my brakes in the front needs to be replaced as well as the rotors and even the steering box needed replaced? Well iItold the service manager I did'nt have the money to get it done right at the moment because of the previous work and I would be in in the morning to pick it up. He further went to tell me how worn my rotors and breaks and why they needed changed in the front. I repeated again, I do not have the money right now to do it and even if I did I did'nt think my steering box needed to be replaced. After about a half hour of his explanations I told him no about at least 20 times. Well In the morning I get a call from the manager and he said my vehicle is ready and the bill is 1578.00. I about lost it. I said what did you say? He explained the bill again. He said I called back up and o.K.ed the repairs. I explained to him I argued with the manager last night stateing how broke I was from the previous work. He said he had an O.K. and the bill is 1578.00. They had the vehicle up in the racks, bay door closed and the chain across the bay when I had gotten there. I told him to remove the parts and I wanted my old parts back. He said he could'nt do that. After having to pay the bill or loose my work truck, they will take the vehicle leagally for a bad repair debt. Later I had found out they repaired my rear breaks because of a box of mangled parts. Why was my rear of my vehicle even touched within any of the service except when I had taken it in because of the load bang? The BBB has done nothing.. The attorney General said they would if there were enouph cases from the same company. but, sorry about your luck. I asked them is'nt what they did illegal? They said it was a matter of he said she said, but they were sent a letter stateing that they are being watched closely.

I wish you Luck,

Jerry

Strange...

Okay.. some things seem unbelievable about your story.

You brought your car in for a clutch replacement. This is at most a few hour job, why in the world did you let them have it for 3 weeks. Also, your owners manual does not have how to put a clutch in. There are technical guides that they even stock that would show how to put the clutch in if by some chance they did have no clue. Once you finally got it, if there were no fluids in your car unless you live in the store you would not have made it out of the parking lot without noticing something was wrong. You stated that the manager said it was not their fault and called the police on you. However, they still sent out an insurance person?

But with that said you may have a case and your lawyers are WRONG. You do not need to have the repairs done first, which is another unbelievable part of the story. But for a better case you need more than one estimate of the cost. This will give the judge something to go off of(they will give you the lowest estimate). Also, be sure you have the statement from the mechanic as to what is wrong with the car.

Why in the world would would you ever take your car to a Pep Boys?
At the very best they are hacks. The only thing that is safe to buy from there is oil and wax.
