Progressive Business Publications (PBP) has tried the same scam on my company today. A person from International Credit Recovery called on behalf of PBP and offered to settle an alleged past due invoice from September 2008 for a 1 year subscription it was never ordered or received. The name they have on file approving the transaction is of an employee no longer with the company since December 2008.

I was told that today is the last opportunity for paying the invoice as they are closing the books and if not paid it will end up in collection. The person was unable to answer why I never received the original invoice or a second notice on the balance due.

I was to consider today's call a courtesy and was offered 3 alternatives:
1) pay $188.00 for the 1 year subscription and it will be cancelled and removed from auto-renewal;
2) pay $82.50 to cancel immediately;
3) if not paid today the account will be sent to collection.

I requested a copy of the invoice to be faxed to my office and I promised to call back today with a response. Payment was to be made by credit card or e-check. Before I had a chance to review the faxed papers the same person called back much more persistent this time.

I suggested to quit calling my office as this was a bogus invoice trying to extort money from my company and I was in the process of filing a report with BBB and other reporting companies that protect consumers from being ripped off by frauds like PBP.
