I stored some stuff at Public Storage while we were in the midst of moving from a house back down to an apparment. I paid late only once in that time. A few months before we were about to move our stuff to another company, I asked the worker at PS how I go about moving my stuff. She told me that all i had to do was move and I wouldnt be charged for the next month's rent. She said they check the doors for the locks EVERY night to know when someone has left. Since our appartment doesnt have storage units, I checked with a storage company accross the street from the appartment complex that is individually owned and opperated.

I went on Feb 28th first thing in the morning to buy our new unit and then came home to let my husband take the van to do the actual moving of stuff. He couldnt get into PS (probably out of his error of not puching in the numbers right) so he came home and I went there to talk to the office staff. I was able to get in the first try and proceeded to pack the van. I packed half the van with stuff and then went and dropped it at the new place. My husband went back to PS around 6 pm and got the rest of the stuff in one trip and moved it taking our lock with him. He put the lock that we bought at PS on the new unit when he finished unpacking the van. I receieved a bill from PS shortly after we had moved everything saying that I still owe $12.58. I called the office to despute it and she said that the last day the lock was on the door was the 6th and that I still owe for those days. I told her I wouldnt pay for a service I didnt recieve and she proceeded to tell me that they would take me to collections.

I then called my new storage and they confirmed that that isnt true. I called the 1-800 number and got the divisional manager's number to talk to him about it, which I still need to do (this all is happening today, so I am not delaying, just getting my facts together). There is NO way that we took the lock almost one week after we moved. the last day we were there was the 28th of Feb. a saturday. How was the lock moved to my new unit inbetween the 28th and march 6th if we havent been there since the 28th? all they have to do is check their camra's to see we havent entered the property after the 28th. They are charging us un-lawfully for the 1st through the 6th. If they take me to collections, I plan on contacting a lawyer about this. Even if its settled before then, they are charging me illegally!!!! Never will use them again.

Hi I am a current employee with Public Storage. I understand your situation, and if you have not gotten any other response, I am glad to inform you that your balance WILL NOT be sent to collections (No amount under $25 is sent). I would however continue to work directly with the district or property manager of that facility rectify the situation. If you indeed did vacate the unit at 6pm on the 28th, the maxmimum that you will owe is a pro-rated amount for 1 days rent (as all vacated must be done before the close of business the last day of the month, which if it was a Saturday 5pm.) I hope this helps and does not sour your experience with Public Storage.
