7/2/07: I received a very official looking personal and confidential bill stating I owe $176.48 to Househould/Great American Visa Classic. It further stated the last payment of $25.00 was made by me on March 7, 1984. I know nothing of this and it has NEVER shown up on my legitimate credit reports. They have the first two and last two numbers of my SSN!!! This is extremely scary to me!

I received two exact copies of this today 7/2/07.
It states we are your new collector and has three ways to pay. I almost fell for it, but I was leery of the 23 years that have gone by with no mention of this so-called debt.

The file number is RJM 1011997748.
Will this be stopped? Where does this report go? Does Congress or the US Mail Service need to be written to?

You are right to be leery

First thing you need to do is find out about your states Statute of Limitations on debt. Then you need to write a letter asking them to validate the debt, this may not be your debt. Then you need to file a report with your attorney general. RJM is not your new creditor, they are a junk debt buyer. This means that any money they make from you means a 100% profit for them. It also means having a debt on your credit report, which may not be yours, for the next seven years.

I had this exact same instance with them and wrote to my attorney general's office. They had to admit that they bought the debt from the now closed CAMCO in January of 2006! New creditor indeed! They had to close my case. Now, this does not mean that they won't resell this debt, but now I have more information to go after the next debt collector.

Good Luck
B.
