Broke down with a bad starter and not knowing anything about the area the tow truck took me to Rose Tire and Service.

Communication was poor or non-existent and time to fix was poor.  Found out after repair that the first replacement starter was bad.  The labor rate was reasonable costing $64.27 however the total of $459.06 was far from reasonable.

Reviews from local folks say they are good and fair, maybe it was my out of state plates that entitled me to different treatment.  $355.92 for a starter I can get off the Internet (including shipping) for $90.00 or locally and in stock for $160.00.  I checked with the supplier they used (which is the same chain I would have used locally) and as far as we can tell they based their sale price on the most expensive starter the chain carries and then marked it up about 75% above their cost.

I had no facts regarding prices and such when I checked out, just past experience.  To say I felt I was being taken would be an understatement.  To make matters worst, I told them I wanted the old starter back (figured I would rebuild it and have a spare), that was fine with them but they were going to charge me a core charge on top of that outrageous markup!

I didn't pay the extra money for the old part, I paid the bill and got as far away from them as fast as I could before stopping for a late lunch in a town way down the highway.  Funny how one business can make you endeavor to avoid an entire town in the future!

YOU know nothing Bubba

AUTHOR: Dick - (USA)

POSTED: Wednesday, June 27, 2012

I don't care HOW good of a job they did or what excuse  you want to use, there is absolutely NO justification for that much of a mark up.  It's a clear case of gouging an out of state customer figuring they will never come back to complain.    And as far as the core charges goes, cores are only charged for if the part is rebuilt.  New parts do not have one!  And since we don't know if the part was new or rebuilt your comment is irrelevant and without justification.  And on the off chance that it was a rebuilt starter and DID have a core charge then the price was doubly out of line!!!!  Tell you what Bubba, bring your car to MY shop and let me charge you accordingly.  Then see how you feel!  You are truly a "Bubba"!

Another Cost vrs Value Missunderstanding

AUTHOR: Bubba Lee - (Canada)

POSTED: Wednesday, June 27, 2012

So you have missed the boat entirely.

You are another customer that knows the cost of everything and the value of nothing.

As a repair shop dealing with a out of town vehicle and Knowing that if you have repeat trouble with the starter they will need to pay to have it re-repaired they will sell and install the best brand starter they can get.

Then of course they are going to mark it up, Usually by doubling the price but if they go by suggested retail, OK they are leaving money on the table. So to speak.

And finally, of course there is a core charge, you are a handy guy, you have dealt with car parts before, don't act dumb.

So to make it short, you took it to a for profit repair center that did the best possible repair and charged accordingly, you as a handy man would have got by on a home built non name brad re-built off the internet instead and accepted the risk.

They can't accept that risk, they would be out of business in two months.
