Ripoff Report-Singer Auto Sales

On or about May 24, 2016, I answered an ad on KSL Classifieds for a 2000 Chev S10 ZR2 being sold by Tom Singer of Singer Auto Sales in Salt Lake.  Mr. Singer stated in the ad that the truck, “...has almost new BFG all terrain Tires...” and “Newer upper and lower ball joints.”  He also stated that he was a “factory trained Chevrolet technician for over 20 years.”  Due to the physical distance between us, I never looked at the truck until after giving a $500 down payment since, according to Mr. Singer, “there are a number of people interested in it.”  On May 25, 2016, after securing funds, I traveled to Salt Lake and only was allowed a short test drive from the UTA Trax Meadowbrook Station to Singer Auto Sales.  I had asked questions both via. telephone and in person of Mr. Singer including if there were oil leaks to which I was told there were no problems with the vehicle,   Mr. Singer represented to me that the brake pads were “thick” indicating that the vehicle had new disc brake pads.  He also stated that he had driven the vehicle on I-15 and had no issues.  The driver’s power window only went down part way and stopped and sounded like it was grinding gears.  Mr. Singer said he would have the problem repaired and documented it on the sales contract stating that, “Dealer would fix driver’s power window” which did not specify if he would effect the repair(s) himself or pay another shop to do them.

Based upon his representations, I closed the transaction, and got on I-15 and headed for Orem.  While traveling at the 70 mph speed limit, I had to decelerate suddenly due to traffic.  The brakes shook the entire vehicle nearly causing me to loose control of the it.  I immediately took the vehicle to my mechanic who inspected the entire vehicle and stated that the rotars were badly scared which caused the shaking when brakes were applied.  He also looked at the tires and found that they were NOT “almost new” but rather that the DOT code stamped on them indicated they were manufactured in 2006 and 2007 and had 1/4" tread left along with having cracks in the tires due to age/weathered.  Also, that the upper and lower ball joints were NOT “newer” as Mr. Singer had stated in his KSL ad.  There is a oil leak from the front main seal and it appeared to me as if someone had put wax or gummy substance in the area of the leak so as to stop it until the sale was completed and the buyer had taken possession of it.  Such a substance would fall or melt off on a long test drive.

I emailed Mr. Singer advising him of my mechanic’s findings and that due to Mr. Singer’s misrepresentation of the condition of the vehicle as published in his KSL Classifieds ad, I was not satisfied with the transaction or confident in his honesty and ability to effect repairs on the power window if he was personally going to perform them and that because of my not sure if he in fact was, as he claimed, a “...factory trained Chevrolet technician...”, that I would have the power window repaired elsewhere and invoice him for the cost.  Mr. Singer refused to pay for the repair and said that he did not misrepresent anything in the ad or in person.  He called me liar numerous times in emails.  I have filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, Consumer Protection and the Utah Motor Vehicle Enforcement Division (MVED) who regulates and investigates used car dealers for fraudulent transactions.

Bottom line, STAY AWAY FROM SINGER AUTO SALES AT ALL COSTS!!!   Very deceptive in their business dealings with the public.
