I opened up a storage unit with Storage Mart in March of 2007. I am a shoe/sneaker collector and in this unit I kept hundred of shoes ranging in value from $100 to $700 a pair. I signed up for insurance on my contents, so I felt I was protected.
In August of 2007 I went to my storage to check up on things. Went I attempted to unlock the unit, my key did not fit correctly into the lock. Someone had obviously messed with it. Eventually I opened it, and to my dismay, about 100 pairs of shoes were gone. Boxes were thrown everywhere. I closed the unit and immediately went to the management office. I took an associate back to the unit so they could see what had occurred. Her first response to me was, we're not responsible for anything if there aren't any signs of a forced entry. She then went on to basically insinuate that I had taken the shoes myself. I told her to let me look at the security footage and she complied. Coincidentally enough, the camera was not pointing in the direction of my unit the day it was broken in to. Also, I was able to obtain an activity report which shows entry into the unit, closure of the unit and alarms that go off. And my unit was opened by someone and an alarm went off on August 28, 2007 at 8:50 pm (10 minutes before they close) and remained opened through the following morning at 10:05 a.m. NOBODY called me regarding the alarm.
I was told to make a list of every item that was stolen and submit it to them. I did so and was then told that they were not responsible in any sort of way. I spoke to their very rude manager, Jerry Jones, who very bluntly told me, we're not responsible for anything. When I told him I didn't want to have to take legal action, he said, get a lawyer if you want...and then hung up on me.
I do not understand how this can take place. They did not contact me when my alarm went off, they didn't honor the fact that I had insurance. It is obvious to me that the theft was internal (had to be someone that worked there). They were able to open up the unit and not break the lock, because they know that's how they can get out of an insurance claim. The camera that always faces my unit was conveniently facing another way on that night. They knew exactly what shoes they were going for, because they took all the unworn and extremely expensive ones.
I simply cannot comprehend how they can do this!
