I worked for the Kroger store listed for 7 months. I started out as a courtesy clerk (bagger) and moved up to cashier after only 2 months. When I first started I told my manager that I had to focus on school before work, and he understood that and made sure I wasn't working more than I could handle.

Well this manager had to quit his job to get a better one that would enable to obtain custody of his young child, and they brought in someone new. When you start working for Kroger they ask you to fill out a form that says what days and hours you are available to work so they can schedule the staff correctly. The new manager, Lisa, apparently lost or threw out all the records on file though.

Lisa made every employee fill out these forms again, which I did not mind, but she kept "losing" the forms, and scheduling people when they could not work. I personally had to fill out this form four times. A friend of mine who was also a cashier had to fill hers out at least three times.

Lisa scheduled me and my friend to work times that were completely impossible for us. We were in high school, and could not work until around 3 in the afternoon, and our forms said this, yet Lisa continually scheduled us to start working at noon, one, or two. When I addressed her about this, she claimed that I had never turned in the form to her.

Knowing that I did in fact turn in the form, I went along with what she said and filled out another one, and handed it to her. The next week when my schedule came out, she still had me scheduled to work while I was going to be in class. I told her this again, but she refused to change my schedule.

I took this directly to the store manager (Hector Juarez), along with my friend, who also had the same problem. Mr. Juarez fixed both of our schedules and said that he would talk to Lisa for us about getting us scheduled for the correct hours.

Me and my friend both worked the schedules Mr. Juarez gave us instead of the schedules Lisa gave us. Lisa was angry with us for not talking to her about having our schedules changed (although we had previously) and told us to fill out our availability forms for the third time.

I filled out the form for the third time, and placed it on top of her pile of forms for the other employees. Lo and behold, the next week, I am still scheduled for the wrong hours! I take this to Mr. Juarez, again, who fixes my schedule for me.

Once again, Lisa gets angry with me for not working the (impossible) schedule she gave me. Lisa threatens that if I do not work my assigned schedule, than she will fire me. After telling her again that I wrote this on my availability sheet, Lisa still says I never gave her one.

I hit the button on the receipt printer that makes it spit out paper, and wrote out my fourth availability sheet on the receipt paper and gave it to her. This did not help at all though.

Once again, I was scheduled to work hours when I would be in class. After filling out four forms and talking with the store manager and Lisa multiple times, I finally had enough. My school work was suffering too much because of Lisa over scheduling me, and I just don't think $6/hour is worth getting held back from graduation.

I quit working at Kroger, and I let everyone know that it was specifically because of Lisa. Since then, many of the other employees have quit or transferred to other stores for the same reason, some of whom had been working for Kroger for 10+ years.

The exodus of so many employees is a testament to how badly Lisa treats the workers, and how little Kroger does to stop this kind of employee abuse. Because of her abuse of power, that Kroger is now severely understaffed, and constantly has very long lines at the check outs.

So when you have to wait in line for a long time at this store, remember that it is Lisa's fault! Because of her many good cashiers left that store. And we were the cashiers that could get you through the line quickly, too!

#6 UPDATE Employee

There must be some mistake!

I have worked along side many others at Kroger #582 at North Richland Hills, Tx for years and coming upon this report about our store really angers me!

To tear someone down for no reason and it also not being true is just all uncalled for! Lisa, during my time with her has more than went the extra mile to assist me and others in anyway possible. She is friendly and does a good job at running the department.

I read the comments made by a former employee, and is all that I can say is that she from what I can remember of her time at Kroger was the one that would not show up for work, always had issues, most of the time brought on by herself! This was not even during times that she was in school like she claims! The workers that come to work and are serious about their job and doing good, do not have any problems! As far as I can remember, I do not recall any of these documented things by this employee to be true!

We have a great store manager and the department heads are all great people, trying to do Kroger a good job and make a difference!

Kroger is a great place to work and I don't want anyone to think otherwise! I think that if you need a job, come by and apply, Lisa will be the smiling face that you will see on the front end! Yes, we do have some openings, mainly because school started again and alot of our workers returned to school. Which happens each and every year the same way, having nothing to do with Lisa.

As far as the people that have transferred from our store, there have been only acouple, and they transferred closer to their homes or they transferred to other cities where they could attend school and stay employeed with Kroger! Not sure where you get off saying that there have been numerous of us that have left because of Lisa! Have you ever thought that you would not have had the problems that you professed to have if you would have come to work and wanted to do a good job instead of cause problems? That is what I remember of this girl that is so outspoken so many months after she left!

I like my job and the people that I work with and I take it personally when someone attacks that! Kroger is the place to work, no matter what the previous report states!

Kroger is the right store at the right price!

I could not agree with you more! I have read several rebuttals shawangunk has posted and everyone one I have seen is malicious and condescending in nature. Do you enjoy to pick on people who are having issues? This is supposed to be a site for constructive criticism and suggestions, not for belittling and degrading people. The annoying part is that on most of your posts where you rattle off, it is incorrect and misleading advice, or just simply being a jerk and no suggestion at all. Case in point--the rebuttal of yours listed above. This girl make it more than clear, to me and the other posters, SHE IS IN HIGH SCHOOL. School should be the most important. I manage a retail chain and I express this to my high schoolers. And this girl was honest with her employer on what she was looking for and what her priorities are. This is something to be praised, not belittled.
Cortney....You go girl!

To Shawangunk in Middletown, New York

I have read several rebuttals today that you've posted and I'm wondering what the hell kind of person you are. All the "advice" you've given has stunk and you belittle every OP in your rebuttals. The young lady in this post made it clear that she is in high school. Of course, student responsiblities are more important than scanning groceries. My job is more important than anything else in my life right now (other than my family), but I am single and live alone. I don't exactly have a chance to be with my family all the time, so I can focus on my work.

If it were me, I would speak to the store manager and let him know that this supervisor is abusing her position and breaking the law. The store could be liable for her actions and get into big trouble. I'd also contact the state Department of Labor and let them know that you were constantly scheduled to work during hours that you were in school. Be sure to let them know that you did give your supervisor your availability sheet (4 times) and that the supervisor lied about not having them. You might have grounds for a lawsuit.

I would imagine that you go to Birdville HS which I know is very close to the store. Your supervisor shouldn't have been complaining about you coming at 3. It wouldn't take you long to get to work. I know people that shop at that store and I'll be sure to let them know about your story. I've worked in retail and know how bad it sucks when you're taken advantage of by your supervisors.

That's nice and all...

1) Texas law regulates how many hours/what hours minors can work while enrolled in school, and many of the hours Lisa scheduled me for were put side of this set limitation. So she wasn't just annoying me, she was breaking the law!

Our managers (except Lisa) always told us that if we needed time off to focus on school, or if our grades dropped, they we could either ask for time off or they would give us time off. It happened to my friend Nicole- Her grades dropped so the managers made her take two weeks off of work. They have to by law.

2) It's not that I didn't like my job, because I did. I just don't like that Lisa abused her powers and then threatened to fire us after saying something about it. Mr. Juarez was much too busy to fix our schedules every week. Lisa should have done it correctly to start with.

Read the ROR

To the above commentor. Did you not read the ROR. This kid is in HIGH SCHOOL. Of course, she should take her school work more seriously than her job. Her JOB is high school. What was she supposed to do - skip school. Then a truant officer would be knocking on her partents door wanting to know why she wasn't in school.

Any manager that would repeatedly schedule a high school student during school hours is not doing their job. The manager obviously did not have what it takes to run her department. Which is obvious from the number of people who have transferred or left that particular Kroger to work elsewhere.

My advice to you

AUTHOR: Shawangunk - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, April 18, 2007

1- If you want to hold a job and earn the respect of your manager/co-workers, don't outwardly admit that you have higher priorities than your job. You're lucky they even hired you based on your statement -- I sure wouldn't have.

2- If you don't like the job, then find a different one elsewhere! That is, if you can find one accepting of the fact that your job is not a priority in your life.
