The Sports Authority, Inc. is headquartered in Englewood, Colorado. It operates over 400 stores in 45 U.S. states under The Sports Authority.

On Sunday, February 17, 2008, my wife went to The Sports Authority retail store located at 11140 Pines Blvd., Pembroke Pines, FL 33026 to purchase a ping-pong table. She hauled the large box from the store to our house. When she got the table home and opened the box, it became clear that this had been a returned item: there were essential pieces missing and the table itself was badly scratched. She returned the table to the store.

At the store, the salesperson gave my wife a replacement table and the salesperson induced her to purchase an extended warranty on the table by representing to her, in front of a third party witness, that, if there was any problem with the table, The Sports Authority would come to our house to pick up the defective table and deliver a new one. Relying on that representation, my wife purchased the extended warranty and brought home a new table. This second table was defective. The metal frame that holds up the table was badly bent.

When my wife called the store to report that the second table is defective, she was hung up on twice. On a third phone call, the person answering the phone refused to connect my wife to a store manager or supervisor. On a subsequent phone call, the "manager" said that, under no circumstances, would the store would deliver a new table if there was a problem with the replacement table. According to the manager, this is not provided by the extended warranty.

Therefore, it appears the salesperson deceived my wife into purchasing an extended warranty by making false representations about the warranty. This is either negligent or intentional misrepresentation and constitutes civil fraud under Florida law.

Stay tuned for how this ends up being resolved. In the meantime, I would caution all consumers to be very careful before making any significant purchases from The Sports Authority. Question everything a salesperson tells you, get confirmation from a manager, read the fine print of any extended warranty before you purchase it, and examine at the store, before you bring it home, the contents of any box to ensure all the required items are in the box and that they are new and undamaged. Apparently, The Sports Authority resells as "new" merchandise that has been previously purchased and returned. Be very alert and careful about making any purchases from The Sports Authority!

belive what makes sence and validate

ok i work for the sports authority and have since 2004. i am a mgr. in the virgina district. let me give my insite to what happened to this customer with the ping pong table. more then likely they were talking to a mis-informed or new employee and in most cases you can tell these employees by the way they offer you the warrenty. but what i would say to you is, first the sports authority does not sell used merch, i think it would really be hard to get that table back in the box if returned by a customer and opened by a customer, its close to impossible. The company that we go through for our extended warrenty is N.E.W when you buy the warranty it has everything that they cover in big bold letters so that you know what you getting. Ive never heard of any company selling a warranty that will cover picking up your product and replacing it for b/w $10 and $20. what they will do is send you a check for the purchase price plus tax, as a customer to n.e.w i know this to be fact. the only time you will get a in home pick up is for stationary equipment or with the serviceplans that are offerd. as you can tell i love my company and belive in helping the customer to the best of my ability and i belive having knowledge about what you are offering plays a big part in that. in this case i belive that you were helped by an untrained employee, which is sad but if we all want to be realistic this will happen now more then ever.

AND TO THE FORMER EMPLOYEE DONT BE BITTER ABOUT THE PAST MOVE ON FROM IT.

#1 UPDATE EX-employee responds

rebutal for sports authority w. some positive words on management!!!

AUTHOR: Arepentida - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, June 15, 2008

I was employed w. sports authority in aventura for 2 years. due to a really stupid thing I did and regret fully, I was let go. all in all, sports authority is a great company which cares about their customers but sale goals impede full customer satisfaction. they have not yet realized this but the sooner they do the better.
someone filed a report on the pembroke store. to respond to it, I admit the company does sometimes sell used items as new. most of the time its returned to the manufactor but sometimes they sell it w the intention of selling used merchandise. to call that store is a hassle-its easier to climb the rocky mountains than get a hold of someone there. and they put u on hold forever!
about the extended warranties, most of the time they take care of the customers. I have seen a used up 2 year old skateboard with no defect traded in for a newer better skateboard! there are times, however, that employees lie to sell since its commision based. its not true they will go to your house and pick up the old item and deliver a new one. that is after the 90 days and only on gym equipment but I believe a delivery charge must be paid. :-/ one time I was told to tell a brazilian customer her bb gun would be covered and we will send her a new one to brazil. I have seem many mad customers back from their land demanding a refund- they never get it. make sure u read the fine print! and keep the receipt if you buy it-they can't track it.
at this time I'd like to apologize to jonathan sarmiento, a very good manager at the aventura store. I'm sorry I lied to you, I regret fully for doing what I did. I shouldn't have betrayed your trust..
to conclude, the store manager at the aventura store Yalain is a deceitful, manipulative person who will lie to customers and hide when they find out the truth. he lies to his employees of advancement in order to increase their work and threatens to fire them if they do not do as he says. 1 time I stayed 5 hrs more as a favor to himand when I left he was mad tht I couldnt stay longer!
