My story is almost identical to everyone else who suffered because of these two companies Union Moving and Extra Move.

In my case they took much longer to show up. I got a new job in columbus hired Union Moving which Extra Move to move my furniture from Philadelphia to Columbus, OH. They picked up my furniture in Philadelphia on Sept 14, 2005. It took them almost four to show up yesterday January 7th, 2006 in Columbus.

When they arrived, they demanded more money than what is in the contract, which they do not deserve anyway. They refused even to show me my furniture in the truck and finally did not unload the furniture and left with it.

At that point I basically knew that the furniture is gone. I am planning to sue them in Detroit where Union Moving is located.

Please contact me at "mhindawi AT math.upenn.edu" if you were another victim to one of these two companies. I can use your help by testifying against them, even by a letter, and you could help to put them out of business.

I also filled a report with the Attorney generals of Michigan and New York against both companies. I encourage everyone to do the same. They won't stop unless we take action against them.

The Attorney General of New York

AUTHOR: Mohamad - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, January 10, 2006

I just wanted to update everyone. I filed a complaint by mail with the Attorney General of New York on Friday 1/6/06. On Monday morning (1/9/06) I received a call from Bill Monteverde who is a manager at Extra Move (smart way moving), asking me to call him because he got paper work from the Attorney General about my complaint and he wants to resolve the problem. He offered to deduct $200 dollars from the balance and pay for the storage unit in exchange of signing an agreement to release the company from any other claims with regards to the delay of delivery. He wanted also to fax it to the office of the Attorney General. He called again today. These people are concerned, I was amazed on how fast their response was once they got contacted by the AG office, specially after jerking me for 4 months.

I asked him to fax the offer to me to have it in writing. I am not going to sign anything releasing them. If they are that concerned about the complaint to the Attorney General then this is the way to squeeze them.

If you suffered or still suffering because of this company, I think you should file a complaint with the AG in New York.

The more complaints they receive, the more credible they will sound. And so far it seems the only thing Extra Move responded to. The complaint might help you getting your furniture or at least some revenge. And my guess, if there are enough number of complaints sent to the AG office, his office might go after Extra Move.

New laws allow for HUGE fines for "Hostage Loads"

AUTHOR: Sharon - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, January 09, 2006

Mohamad,

In August, George Bush signed into law new regulatiosn fo movers to follow. One of them allowed for fines of $10,000 a DAY for "hostage loads". When the movers refuse to deliver unless you pay a hiked up fee, this is a hostage load. They are holding your goods for ransom. Here's the law:

"PENALTIES FOR HOLDING SHIPMENTS HOSTAGE
As indicated under estimating requirements, collecting no more than 110% of the original estimate at delivery is still a requirement (plus charges for shipper-requested services and shuttle capped at 15% of the total bill due at delivery). A mover cannot hold a shipment hostage while attempting to collect more than 110% of the original estimate. If a mover holds a shipment hostage for such payments, a civil penalty of $10,000 for each day the shipment is held can be assessed and a mover's authority suspended for as long as three years. Also, criminal penalties can apply for holding a shipment hostage by falsifying documents or demanding payment for services not performed or not necessary. A fine and imprisonment up to two years can be incurred. "

Cal the Department of Transportation (1-888-DOT-SAFT) and ask about this new law when you file your complaint. Extra Move, Inc, which also does business as Smart Move, has been complained about a lot lately. if anyone deserves to get these huge fines, they do.

I hope something works out for you!
