I should have known better, as I once taught with UoP (2002-2004).  Yet, I found myself needing to take a few classes for my retirement career (teaching), and so I decided to use my VA benefits.  I enrolled, and started taking classes towards a BA English.  At each step, I was told, "this is the last step you'll need to accomplish."  A year later, I just found out that all of my transfer credits did not count and to receive a degree I would need to re-accomplish all the classes I was "waived" for when I enrolled.  I already have a BS and a MA degree (MA from the University of North Carolina).  I also used to teach at UoP.  Yet, somehow they were expecting me to take classes I took 30 years ago.  I went from needing just a few classes to earn my 2nd bachelor's to suddenly needing 16.  Quite a scam!  I just disenrolled.

What's so amazing is that they know this is a ripoff, yet they do it anyway.  I'm also an idiot for believing them, having once worked there and knowing what jerks they are.  One thing they do well is get their hands in your pockets, telling you whatever you want to hear.  Only later do they spring the trap.

transferrable credits

AUTHOR: LCarter027 - (United States of America)

POSTED: Tuesday, June 14, 2011

There are SO MANY things wrong with your post!! What you're saying does not make sense, and is completely WRONG. Although you were a former UOP Instructor, that does not mean that you understand the ins-and-outs of the academic world. Unfortunately you feel jaded from your experience with UOP. Let me correct a few things for you... based on your post!

Being that you already have 2 degrees, you should know that NOT all credits that you earn from a  university are transferrable. If you attend a Regionally Accredited University (like UOP and all of the other big schools around the country.) typically those credits are transferrable. However, the RECEIVING college has the final say-so in what they will accept and/or not accept. So the amount of credits that will transfer will differ from school to school! Also, if you were/are trying to become a teacher, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to do the research to find out what the state requirements are in order to get credentialed. So please don't blame UOP for that!

Yes, you must re-take classes that you took 30 years ago!! Duh... you've gotta be kidding me.. that you'd question that. A lot has changed in 30 years in the academics world, so how can you question re-taking some classes that are so antiquated?!

Although you only needed a few classes to finish your degree, EVERY college have residency requirements. Which means, that in order to become a student there, you are required to take a minimum amount of credits with that institution. So the fact that you only needed a few classes, is irrelevant. To prevent having to take extra classes, you should have gone back to the college that you 'almost' finished your degree with. That school probably would have allowed you to pick up where you left off (unless the version of your program was outdated - then you will (again) have to re-take classes in the correct program version!) So it seems as if UOP did not mislead you...it seems as if YOU DIDN'T TAKE THE TIME TO find out what was best for YOU!
