I started working for West in May of 2007 at the rate of .17 a minute talk time. I am a stay at home mother. I had a really good job which I lost a year ago, and have been looking for a way to make ends meet. I stumbled across West on the Internet, and from what they advertise you can make up to 10-12 hr. I do not have any other job, and I was scheduling myself for 8 sometimes 8+ hours a day, 5-6 days out of the week. My first check for only one week was $100. The next check for two weeks was about $200. I was averaging about $20 a day. It was definately not enough for somebody who has financial obligations including rent or a mortgage. Then I got an email on 6/14 saying that there was a new pay rate. A guaranteed rate of $6.00 an hour + $0.14 a minute talk time starting on June 25th. Guaranteed should mean guaranteed but it is not.
This email is very misleading and it was not true. In order to make the 6 bucks an hour you have to be a slave to them on the phone. You must be logged in your whole scheduled time or they will jip you out of your pay. Needless to say I did not get paid the $6 an hour they told me I would. After two weeks of this so called new pay rate my paycheck is only going to be $288 and that includes the talk time per minute rate of $0.14. I scheduled myself for 80 hours and they said I only worked 48. Never the less you should be payed what you worked.
If I worked 48 hours x $6.00 an hour it should equal $288.00 + my talk time which my paycheck reflects $246.67 for 1761.92 minutes worked. Instead they paid me $40 for the hours I worked + talk time of 246.67. At this rate a person would have to be logged on to the phone all day for the entire 24 hours to make anything. Their pay scale is a joke. They lie to get you to work for them, and then they don't have any obligation to you because you are an independant contractor. To make things worse I got another email on 7/12 saying that they are going back to $0.17 a minute, and no longer paying the "guaranteed" rate.
The last time I worked I sat around waiting for a call, and got a lot of wrong numbers and prank calls. It would be a waste of time to sit around waiting to take calls and getting paid nothing to do it. This whole pay situation has left a sour taste in my mouth and I am posting this because I want other to know, and come forward with any similiar experiences they have had with this company. Especially other single moms who want to stay at home with their children but need to work.

YOU SAID: "This email is very misleading and it was not true. In order to make the 6 bucks an hour you have to be a slave to them on the phone. You must be logged in your whole scheduled time or they will jip you out of your pay."
I'D SAY: (a slave.. what a joke, YOU scheduled your own hours) When you have a job you always have to actually perform the work (yes the whole job not half of it) to get the paycheck.. Can you imagine showing up for your 9-5 job at noon and leaving at 3 and then demanding your full pay ;)
If you scheduled yourself for 80 hours and then only got paid for 48, it was because you were only "make ready" for those 48 of the 80 hours. You may have been logged in but you were not accepting calls for the other time.. More than likely, you were utilizing the "make busy" button which meant that you were not recieving any calls or orders. So.. you logged in for your scheduled shift but then went offline and made a consciencous decision not to accept calls. It sounds to me like you were the one that was trying to scam someone... (you thought you could log in and get paid the guaranteed rate even know you were not actually working). This is exactly why they make you adhere to the schedule of 90%. How can you schedule YOURSELF (in half hour increments that you self schedule anytime for yourself) for 80 hours and then only show up for a little over half your shifts and then complain that THEY scammed YOU?
I have actually never recieved a wrong number call, I have recieved a couple prank calls late at night but what do you care when the company is still paying you for every fraction of a minute that your actually on the line. Furthermore: If you worked 8 hours a day x 5 days a week x 2 weeks and only logged in 1761 minutes of talk time= 22 minutes per hour. I have had slow hours when they were selling stuff that is not in demand but never have I only averaged 22 minutes an hour. I have actually logged 1700 minutes in two shifts.. never mind 10.. either your lying and you were not logged in or your customer service skills were really bad and you were kept on the 2nd tier which means you only recieve the overflow calls.

I found west at home because my mother got a job there. I thought it must be one of those work from home scams but after seeing her making a weekly paycheck, I applied and started in late october of 2007. I work whatever hours I choose in half hour increments and think this is the best benifit of working for west. I agree with the the other employee when i say that you did not do your research.
I am a stay at home mom and my husband works full time, my extra west money would never be enough to actually live on and raise a family unless I worked more than my 40 hrs a week (which for the record... overtime is not permitted unless yu get permission in advance). I use the opportunity to earn whatever I want and on my schedule. If I have a project to get done around the house I work when I want and save the money to accomplish those projects.
You absolutly could make $10 to $12 an hour at times. You make more money per minute on certain shifts, the night shift usually pays 25 or 27 cents a minute as compared to the 17 cents a minute during the day shifts, they often have guaranteed rates on certain hours such as a big sale or popular item that your project is selling. They make it very clear that you have to be signed into the portal and available to take calls for 90% of your shift to recieve the guaranteed hourly rate. This is to reward the employees that are actually working and not just signed into the system to take advantage of the guaranteed rate. They make it very clear in all the guaranteed rate offers. You didn't recieve the pay because you were not signed in for at least 90% of your shift!!!!! It's your fault, if you schedule that shift and then did not follow through with it.
In all honestly, I work between 30 and 40 hrs a week and get paid every other week.. I usually bring home about $500 after taxes. Decide for yourself but it's definitally not a scam. Also, they grade you on customer service, sales and upsells and if your scores are low.. you don't get as many calls.

I am sitting here reading these comments and wonder where you get your information. Do people not have the common sense to read contracts and pay attention to details before signing up or making commitments? I've been working for West for over a year now. I started as an Independent Contractor and then made it through the conversion to employee.
I started this as a part-time job for some "play money" and I never expected it to be anything BUT that. I did some research about it - learned all I could about it - read alot of questions and answers before jumping into it. They couldn't be more straight forward about things. There's nothing hidden about this opportunity. If people would slow down for a minute - quit rushing through life - they would take the time that I did - as no one likes surprises.
People these days are so quick to blame others for their own incompetence. This is a great opportunity for many different people for many different reasons. Where else can you sit and work in your pjs? Why would you, in the beginning, use this as your sole means of income if you don't know anything about it. It's a part-time job for me. I do have a full-time job during the day. My job's hours flex from time to time so I needed something that was flexible. You can't get more flexible than you making your own schedule - and the shifts being 30 minutes each.
Learn a project then add to it. I do 3 - two are pay per talk time and the other is guaranteed. Between the three - I make some good play money. Don't be so quick to slam something when YOU are the one that didn't research before you jumped in. That just shows a lack of common sense!!
