I fell into merchandising after a sudden divorce that made me a "displaced homemaker." Merchandising jobs were nearly all that was availabe, immediately, in a tough economy last spring, so I leaped at the chance of employment after being out of work for nearly 6 months.
The lure of the high wages these companies pay per hour is enticing, not to mention the number of hours the recruiters who represent them claim you can get in a given week: 32 hours a week seems to be the industry standard.
For those of you who don't know, large companies hire "merchandisers" throughout the nation to go into major retail chains, from grocery stores to department stores, to perform tasks for the manufacturers of products that they represent. Most of what you see displayed in retail outlets is, generally, done by a merchandiser and not an employee of the store.
All of these positions are part time, and it's a rare merchandising company that offers sick/vacation days and/or benefits. Furthermore, they have figured out a way to avoid paying employees for their drive time/mileage, even though these employees work out of their homes and must travel daily to and from a job site in a retail outlet.
Merchandising is a huge industry, to be sure, and I have worked for three of them in the last year alone.
The jobs are fairly easy to get, and that's a bonus when you're desperate for work.
Still, the recruiters of these companies promise job security in the form of hours that they cannot deliver. The recruiter at the first company for which I worked said I'd be working 32 hours a week. You don't find out until you're hired, though, once you actually talk to the person who will be your boss, that they cannot guarantee you'll get ANY hours every week, let alone the maximum of 32.
What was worse, by hiring me and others at that time, the employees who'd been there for years had their hours reduced by half. This created such a hostile work environment, it was difficult to do the job. I couldn't blame those employees: My existence took bread from their mouths.
I finally got another, better, merchandising job, and was finally able to quit that one.
Although I am on a dedicated team, which means I am assured a certain number of hours and constant work, not to mention a decent hourly wage, we're getting ripped off because they do not pay mileage/drive time unless you travel more than 40 miles or drive an hour to the job site.
I've been on this job for nearly nine months, and I love it. I'm good at it, have earned bonuses and recently received a pay raise of $1 more per hour. I have no reason to complain.
Still, this company takes advantage of my willingness to drive nearly 450 miles a week to service my assigned stores without providing even half of what it costs to operate my vehicle for the job. I've put nearly 20,000 miles on the car I bought on Feb. 5 because of this job.
My beef is this: We are not paid mileage/drive time to get from our homes, our offices, as it were, to the job sites. This should be illegal, given the fact that we cannot possibly go to a regular office first (the HQs are in Florida, Texas etc.) before hitting the road to perform our work. We should be paid mileage/drive time the second we leave our home offices.
Secondary to that main issue, we also aren't able to accrue sick days or vacation days. If we cannot work, we lose money. Plus, at least in my position, you are chastised for needing time off. It comes across as a threat to your job, basically, when you are ill or need personal time. Illness or personal needs aren't allowed. We're expected to make up the time for those circumstances by rescheduling our tasks, which means we have to work six or seven jobs in one day. We should be able to ask for time off or help to cover tasks that we cannot do.
Although I love my job, my employer takes whatever I let him allow from me every single day.
If I were paid for ALL of my time that I spend on my employer's behalf, I would have no reason to complain. What my company is expecting from me, ultimately, though, is unfair and possibly illegal, especially when it comes to drive time/mileage.
All retail merchandisers work out of their homes, and their homes should be treated like the home office. I'd be paid mileage and be on the clock if I left the HQ to go do a job in the field. We should be paid drive time/mileage from the minute we leave our "offices" to work in the field, regardless of the fact that our HQ is our own home.
How these companies get away with this policy is baffling.

Old issue ...

AUTHOR: KentuckyWoman - ()

POSTED: Thursday, July 25, 2013

This was written a couple of years ago, so, yes, I did spend my time more wisely afterward!

Working full time now for a great company. And, yes, I am still a merchandiser.

The good jobs in this field are out there; just keep working at it and gaining experience. It pays, in the end.

While I have nothing good to say about Crossmark, other than they hired me, I think your perspective is a little off and your energy would be better spent directed elsewhere.

Just proves companies only care about one thing.

That one thing is money they could care less about ethics and how to treat employees right and with respect and decency. It's a real bummer some bigger stores don't just up and ban those companies and their reps or employees from ever entering their stores and then just hire locally for their merchandising stuff. It's called outsourcing but they're so darned cheap about it and I don't just mean on pay but on the qualifications and skills of their "management" teams. The only sleazy company I used to work for that I actually got a response from and there's no proof that the person who rebutted actually works there was PRS aka Premium Retail. The person who fired back in no way was professional about it and she illegally disclosed confidential company information about an employee or a former employee on a public domain and website. that's a violation of company law and protocol. It could get your butt fired Sue from PRS but like you care sitting their in your ivory tower in Chesterfield, MO or wherever it is. Lucky for you and other sleazy companies like this we don't drag your butts into the courts and even worse show up at the corporate offices, protest and get you the negative types of media attention other big firms have gotten over the years. Wish the media would do more in depth reporting on these frauds like PRS, Crossmark etc.

A sleazy company.... is Crossmark

The fact that Crossmark never reacts to any of the postings shows they don't got it together when it comes to employee relations.  I worked at similiar online companies as advertised.  I discovered how badly they treat employees with working conditions.  Sick days are made into a threat working with these sleazy companies.  Any real company has guidelines put together for employee problems. Crossmark is a cheap company.

I am Scared

AUTHOR: Grandbeauch - (United States of America)

POSTED: Thursday, February 23, 2012

Speaking of mileage, my company just got bought by Crossmart and my job entails driving ALOT. My mileage re-embursement went from .36 cents per mile to .31 cents per mile. They gave me a dollar raise to make up for it. I also have to eat the first 40 miles where at my last company they paid for all mileage. I am scared because I have read such horror stories and do not want to be scewed.

I worked at Crossmark for 1yr almost 2yrs before I started working at the Sam's Club I was demoing at and I have never really got anything from them beside so many rules like report by 9pm that day or you get a write up and the supervisor wanted your Crossmark password so he/she can check to make sure my supervisor was a d**k I asked for a day off and so I can spend it with my girlfriend and i was told you need to stop doing that when your asking for more days to work but I was not really getting more days and I was also threaten that my days will be shorten if I go near the demo room when shopping and the demo room for us was next to aisle 40 Coffee/Water I was tempted at returning my Sam's Card I paid for because of the supervisor and working with Sam's Club they HATE to lose a member oh and when we work 6hrs we only get a 30min lunch and not a 15min break as well stated by law because Sam's Club make sure your taking you breaks because it the law when you work 5hrs you get 1 break 6hr 1 break and 1 lunch 8hrs 2breaks and 1 lunch.

#1 UPDATE EX-employee responds

We're in the same boat there well we were.

AUTHOR: Dave - (USA)

POSTED: Tuesday, September 20, 2011

I just terminated at will my employment with them. Laura Anguello from San Jose California who claims to cover my state Idaho while I have Stephanie Snow a really nice lady from Washington covering that state as far as managment goes. Well Laura falsely acused me of falsifying hours on some store visit that never showed up on my calendar and was pining for info to try and get my butt fired. She sort of succeeded but only as far as my being put on admin leave from my field representative job until such a time our supposed HR in TX could investigate. The point is yes they are breaking the law in all 50 states and Crossmark knows it. They by law have to pay us for every second worked from the admin time spent online on the sales track system all non in store time that is finding work, reporting it, scheduling it, accepting or rejecting assignments, making any related calls to Crossmark, the clients or client stores, name brands etc., all the email stuff, all the crossmark citrix or crossmark connect related stuff. Basically if it is work related the IRS states by law it must be paid to the employee not to the company that includes all the time spent in ones vehicle that is work related yet these suckers get away with highway robbery and only paid us mediocre rates per hour and then our managers are a*s holes so to speak as far as how they treat us. Is it any wonder the turn over for this company is so high? They pay off professional liars aka recruiters to sucker you into the job and then the managers treat you like crap. The only nice ones I dealt with was at corporate itself and especially our third party highered out of Mexico by the way tech support call center. Chrissy Merafuentez and Laura Anguelo are in my opinion two bitches in the same pod and PMSING big time. You don't argue with them. They don't hear what they want to hear they find excuses to fire you and trust me they take it personally when you report their sorry butts to our HR. If I were you person who posted this original post I'd leave the job and come and work for ASM. I just got hired there and the manager for the NW lives right near you over there in the Seattle Area. She's quite nice. Email me back some time and I'll give you her personal number if I can find it. Best wishes but I'd leave the sinking Crossmark ship asap. They need to be sued big time and I want personal damages from that Anguelo and Merafuentez couple. The only one who treated me right was Stephanie Snow and trust me she's in the wrong line of work if she wants to be so nice about it. Crossmark sucks period.
