I did a google search for Trend Micro because I purchased a new computer and since I already had purchased Trend Micro I needed to know how to install it on my new computer.  The following website popped up second:

  1. Support for Trend Micro - Call USA Toll Free 24/7 Helpline‎

    www.install-antivirus.com/Trend-Micro

    1 (877) 571 5077
Support for Trend Micro by iYogi.

They were very pleasant but when they wanted me to go to ammy.com to give them control of my screen I refused.  I said, "I don't know who you really are and why would you need to control my screen if you are from Trend Micro.  Can't you just look up my information?  He said no, that's the only way he could fix it.  And he said, you called me, so you know who I am.  Never once did he admit he was not employed by Trend Micro.  He then gave me to his "second level tech support guy", Daniel.  Both he and Daniel had Indian accents by the way.

Finally, against my better judgment, I gave Daniel control of my old laptop....thinking what the heck, I'm not keeping it anyway.  He proceeded to tell me I could get another 8 years out of it and it was very sick, went into my system config and showed me everything that was "stopped" and said this needed to be fixed right away because it had already spread to my new laptop.  He wanted me to work with a Microsoft licensed repair specialist and asked for my zip code to see where one was close to me...then said, no there isn't one close to you so I can transfer you to one and he can help you over the phone for a mere $299.

I told him I woul check with my IT department thank you very much.  He started to argue with me and asked why I was confused, so I finally yelled at him to "Get off my computer!!!!"  And immediately give control back to me!!!  He did and I hung up.  I'm very worried now about what he was able to get from my computer....or someone else in the background did while he was keeping me busy talking.  Yikes!!!  This is a scam!!!  Do not call them!!!  They lie and they are very convincing.  I thought I was pretty savvy and would not be taken in!!!  Beware!!!

An obvious way to spot

I am glad you did not go all the way with them; however, I am not sure about your computer condition. This is a type of bait and switch scam. Often time, they would reconfigure your computer that causes it to be either unstable or will not boot up after you restart while they are taking control of your computer. Then they will say that your computer is broken and need a certain amount of money from you for the fix.

The obvious way to verify whether they are working for who you are looking for (the company company) is to look at the domain name! It is obvious that the URL you provided (install-antivirus dot com) is NOT Trend Macro but simply someone else with a path named as Trend Macro. You can look at their information from whois, and you will find that the owner (registrant) of the domain name is Vishal Dhar.

Also, another suspicious spot is that the "iYogi Inc." owns/associates with other 170 domain names! In other words, they have many other domain names to be used in their operation!

I hope you would not get scammed again in the future. Please keep your eye on the domain name, not the path of the URL. There are many otherslike this operating in the wild.
