Hello, I don’t normally put in complaints but I just got off the phone with a representative for Compel Fitness {a personal trainer program for Gold’s Gym} who just gave me some disturbing news. Allow me to back up.

I have wanted to lose weight for a while now but could never do it on my own. I needed motivation. I signed myself up for Gold’s Gym in Downtown Pittsburgh and signed up for the personal trainer program {which is a separate company contracted through Gold’s Gym for individuals who want a personal trainer}. I was approached by an associate named Yarden {or Jarden; not sure of the spelling}. I was told that upon signing up for Gold’s Gym I would have 1 free session if I was interested in having a personal trainer, to get an idea of what they had to offer me.

I got up there, I did my thing, broke a sweat and it lasted about half hour to 45 minutes. It felt great and I was confident that a personal trainer was what I would need to lose the weight I needed; normally when I work out by myself I take multiple breaks {some lasting an hour or so} and I have such a poor diet yada yada…. I needed motivation.

Yarden took me over to fill out the application and discuss their program. He didn’t really donate any information to me unless I asked for it. The only information he was freely feeding me was what my diet should be, what kinds of exercise I should do, what my goals were etc. I told him I wanted to lose inches NOT gain muscles and he explained what equipment and types of exercise would help me with that etc. Although what he was saying was very pleasing to my ears, I more so wanted to know what I was signing up for first. I asked him how long each session was, he said about 20-30 minutes. I asked how much each session was, he said $45 a session.  I asked if I can alter my sessions so that I see a personal trainer every so often. After calculating $45 a session, I was beginning to think it was a bit steep. He said yet and we were setting up for me to see a PT once every 2 weeks {$90 a month}.

We went on to talk about my goals to my ideal weight etc. I didn’t realize till now that he was, perhaps, distracting me? He pulled out the paper and pen and said sign here and there but didn’t quite explain what I was signing. Me being excited that I was finally getting off my lazy butt and doing something about my image I signed where he wanted. I never signed up for a gym before.

He never explained to me that I was signing a year contract. He never explained to me that I had 3 days to cancel for a full refund of my money. Heck, I didn’t even know I was going to be charged an enrollment fee of $100 till after I signed all but the last page of the documents. He never told me that if I wanted to cancel I have to submit a letter to corporate, nothing. All he did was talk about MY goals. Yeah it was nice to hear about my goals and what I need to accomplish it but it would have benefitted me MUCH MORE had he went over how their program WORKS and the enrollment fee and the cancelation etc. Then after that, once I signed the dotted line THEN go over my goals and plans. That was a couple weeks ago.

TODAY, I spoke to an agent with Compel Fitness on the phone that was nice enough to explain all of this to me. Apparently I have to submit an email {or write a letter} to cancel the enrollment BUT I have to pay a $250 cancelation fee OR 15% of the year contract fee {after so many days}. None of this was even mentioned in the copy contract I was given.

Because I am still within the time period, it is only $250. So now I am about to write out this email but I felt the need to write this message and warn you PLEASE, if you sign anything with anyone, do not let them get you side tracked. Ask ALL questions and make sure the person goes over what you are signing!! They look at money, they do not care who you are! Once you sign the dotted line, they have $$$ in their pockets and that’s all they care about! I can't afford a lawyer so i am not going to spend money JUST to save myself $250. Not worth it. So i'll pay their little fee, throw them the finger and be on my way. NEXT TIME i will ask the right questions and do a review search on the company before i sign anything anymore.

Meanwhile I found a gym closer to where I live, the enrollment fee is $10 {special months it’s only $1}, and their personal trainers.. ARE FREE! So much better! That gym is called Pxxxx (((REDACTED))) Fitness!

Same Story at Market Square

AUTHOR: Anonymous - ()

POSTED: Sunday, December 29, 2013

Same exact case happened to me at the Pittsburgh Gold's Gym in Market Square, and around the same time this report was posted, actually. I was never alerted that it was a year contract until my credit card was already run through the system, and the $100 fee was never mentioned until I already agreed to the program. Obviously displeased by the dishonesty, I addressed the issue with the manager at Gold's (not the Compel manager) and he said they typically give a grace period to revoke the agreement because this happens a lot. When I told the Compel manager I wanted to cancel my contract, he gave me an attitude and tried to act like the terms of the contract were obvious. He continued to try to (rudely) sell me on the program after I had told him several times that I wanted to cancel. My agreement was cancelled and my money was refunded; however, I can see on here that even the trainers feel they need to post the same smart-alic speech they make to everyone after they've been duped.

What was also funny was that they try to market these "free sessions" to you that you can sign up for occasionally, but after the session, they try to pressure you into joining the program AGAIN, even though they already know you declined it the first time. I'd rather continue to work out on my own if I'm going to get a sales pitch every time I try to take advantage of a free session.

I'm still a member at Gold's because I do like the facility and it's in a convenient location for me, but I will never sign up with Compel. (It's overpriced anyways.)

Again like I said, we went over my goals; types of exercises, eating habits, equipment to use etc. while seated and filling out this agreement. I remember telling you this was for a wedding in California {near the beach that I wanted to visit while down there} that was set for February 2014; which was less than a year away {in fact about 5-6 months away from the day we met}. So why would I sign up for a year of something if I only needed it for about roughly 4 up to 6 months?

I remember us going over what to expect from me monthly and I remember telling you that I wanted to see a PT every 2 weeks till the wedding and you told me that was doable. You even calculated that it would take me about 5 up to 6 months to lose the ideal weight I wanted to shed off which was perfect to me. – Again, more reasons on why I was misled that this was a month to month contract not a full year based off our conversation. Yes it might have been a blank sheet but the way you went about it with our conversation was misleading and evil. If this is your idea of “cleaning up” then you are no better. But that’s ok, I did learn from this.

Just addressing the complaint held by "Tonica." I was actually brought their to that location to clean up the PT department. Before I came there admittedly there most likely were a lot of mishandled agreements. I am disappointed that you feel you were misled. A lot of the things you are saying are simply untrue and are not a fair representation of the actual events. there is no reason for me to treat you differently than anyone else that I helped get a trainer there or anywhere else. I remember clearly that we spent almost 15 minutes reviewing the programs. On the agreement the first thing that is written (which we hand write in front of you) is the amount of sessions in the program andthe length of the program. The next thing that is hand written in front of you is the total amount that is due immediately. I give you more credit as an adult that is pretty intelligent to sign something that is blank. We both know that did not happen. We explain all the terms up front and then supply you with a copy to take home and review. We do this because sometimes people do not hear everything we are saying and they have a better opportunity to read it and  decide if it is still a good fit for them when they are alone. It is called a "cooling off" period.

To be even more sure that you were not railroaded. Your payment was postdated for the following week. During which time you were called twice to schedule a session. Neither time did you express that you did not want to pursue the training. It was not until the payment did not go through that I assumed there was an issue. To which another set of follow up calls was made. No reply.

Tonica and anyone who is reading this. I have been in the fitness industry for 10 years and I have never purposefully misrepresented anything. In every circumstance where clients have felt that way and I was at fault in anyway I have rectified it without any issue. Please when writing these reports supply the truth. We are adults and it is hard to maintain a good reputation as it is. Tonica I am still open to any communication that will make you feel more comfortable about our interaction. the last thing I want to do is damage your journey to get fit.

And my name is spelled Yardon.

Exact same case

I had the esact same thing happen to me. Exact same sales pitch. I actually asked them twice about their cancellation policy. The girl said with a straight face "None whatsoever". It was however mentioned in the contract somewhere in the smallprint about their cancellation policy. They are such a ripoff. I have another friend who was cheated in the same way.
