My daughter contacted my At&T Tech support on 5/1/14 because of a WiFi connection problem on her cell phone. At&T took control of my computer and then told me that they cant fix it but they discovered 8,400 security breachs and that they had to immediately fix it. They showed us screen shots when they took control of my computer so we took pictures of it. My daughter called me at work while on the phone with at&t explaining what they told her and asked if it was ok that they  transfer her to a level 7 tech. I asked if it could wait until I got home but they said it was imparitive I do it now so I said ok so they transferred her to Global Tech. Global Tech spent 3 hours trying to fix the wifi problem but could not but they did fix the computer compromise so they made an apt with At&T, which I confirmed and At&t came over the very next day to replace the modem. I saw something suspicious on my computer with regards to the wifi so on Sat 5/3/14 I called At&T again and they said they never heard of Global Tech. Global Tech is based in India so it seems there may be a tech that is working for At&t referring calls there possibly?  I called at&t again on 5/5 and they said they would call me back, which they didnt.   As of today 5/6, I have not heard back from At&t as they said they have to research this. I posted my concerns again on the At&t community website and someone called back but said the same thing. They dont know how or why they would transfer me to an outside source and that Global Tech is not someone they would use as tech support.   I am worried that my computer is compromised but AT&T says that since they replaced the router all is more than likely fine. I don’t buy it. I did get my $199.00 credited back as I disputed the charge from Global Tech. I feel that after talking to 5 reps from At&t and no one calling me back that they are either hiding something or they dont know what happened but are basically done with this problem and are not taking responsibility for this. I would like them to set up someone to come to my house and see if there are any compromises to my computer or if there is anything suspisious going on that Global Tech did while they had control of my computer for 3 hours.  Is my computer compromised now????  Is there any damage to my identity at this point. Why do I have to pay for someone to check out my computer and have to pay for it when my original call was about a signal to a cell phone?  Please beware when you get involved with outside sources as they may be doing more harm than good.

You keep talking about I and Me.  Yet YOU did not call "AT&T", your daughter did.  YOU did not make the appointment with "AT&T"...your daughter did.   You don't say how that appointment was made?   Perhaps they called and on your behalf, out of earshot of your daughter, saying that they were your tech support person and need someone to come out and change the router.  Perhaps they had enough information to log onto your account and do an on-line appointment.

You do not know what number your daughter dialed.  How did she get the number?  None of those questions are ones you answered.

In addition, if you search this site you can find MANY reports very similar to yours where a person THOUGHT they were talking to the real company, when in fact they were calling some third party company 100% unaffiliated with the company they were trying to get a hold of.

So you can go on thinking that for some strange reason a rogue AT&T employee is taking kickbacks when they refer people to some outside agency.  But it does not even appear that you have enough information.

By the way what does your daughter say in all of this?

I need to calm down? Im perfectly calm.

First of all, if ATT didn’t transfer me to this so called bogus company than how did they know about the service call that Global Tech set up for me to come to my house and replace the Router? I called ATT right after that and ATT knew about the Apt and even called later in the day to verify. Sorry this was not my doing. Secondly, my letter/report is very detailed and speaks for itself.  Oh and yes I was duped because I trusted ATT. If it was anyone else, this would not have happened.

Your report raises several questions to me.

My first question is... Who is your Internet Service Provider (ISP)? I am going to make a guess from now on. You are using AT&T Uverse for your Internet. The reason I make this guess is because it is the only service from AT&T, I can think of, is related to providing Internet connection service.

Then, you said your daughter called AT&T, my next question is what was the "number" she made a call to? It is very easy to verify whether she did call the correct number of AT&T or she called a company who claims to be AT&T or an affiliated of AT&T. It is very unlikely that a phone call can be "transfered" from one organization to an outsider.

Then my next question for this is "how did they transfer the phone call"? Did they simply say "please wait while the phone is being transfered"? If so, then the phone number is not AT&T but another company regarding to your report (the Global Tech introduce themselves to your daughter from the call). No telecommunication company would and/or could transfer a phone call to another company. If they asked your daughter to call another company, then it is very unlikely to be AT&T because the transferred target must still be AT&T, not an affiliated or outsider.

Then back to your "error event" issue. Your picture does not include each error event detail; therefore, it is pretty much useless as an evidence. The total number of event may be the total number of error events during a long period of time. The high number and multiple calls within a short period of time could be from communication difficulty between your daughter phone and the router. The problem using Wifi from a phone is NOT an indication of a network being compromised. Sometimes, it could simply be resolved by reseting your router due to communication error within hardwares when you use Windows as your OS. I guess you are being panic because you watch too much of network security on TV. Those news are for selling and are not correctly delivered the knowledge to audiences but rather scare them, so that they can keep them watching their program.

Now you are not sure whether your computer has been compromised. What I would do is to scan the computer for any malwares. It is very unlikely for a computer to leave trojan/backdoor/virus/malware in your computer. Why? Because that is unprofessional and it is easily tracable. As a result, they could easily be found and arrested.

Have your identities been stolen? I do not know. Why? Because your question is too broad. If you are talking about being stolen by this specific incident, then I have to ask you a question -- Do you save any personal information, such as SSN, personal documents, etc in your computer? If so, I can't guarantee that they have not been seen them because you allow them to remote access your computer. If you do not and your scan comes out clean, then I do not see it being stolen from this incident.

Your instinct was right when you didn't want to rush into authorize them to remotely access your computer, but their scare tactic got you. Next time when anything about tech issue happens, you should try to look for the second opinion. Just my two cents.

As stated in my report, my daughter contacted ATT directly and not an outside source. ATT then transferred the call to this outside source.

Incorrect Company...

Most likely here is what happened.

Your daughter somehow contacted an outside company not affiliated with AT&T.  Whether she did an internet search, or went off of some pop-up on her computer is impossible for anyone to say...even you because you were not there.  But you can be just about guaranteed that she did not at any point talk to the real "AT&T".

There are several companies that know how to get their search results to the top and they use names that to the person who isn't paying attention think that they are dealing with the actual provider.  This is also why AT&T isn't really helping you, because they have no relationship with this other company in any way shape or form.  They would probably want them gone just as much as you do, but that is just not something that is possible.   It would be like you trying to get Microsoft to send you 1 Million dollars because someone sent you an e-mail saying they were from Microsoft and you just won the Internet Lottery.

Oh and as for the screenshot that they showed you, that is your Events Log and while there are errors and warnings that windows is reporting, they are most likely not security breaches.  But again companies like this use "scare" tacticts that basically make someone think if they don't take care of this immediatly that somehow the world will blow up and you will end up in some black hole.

As for any possible security breaches.  Since I have no idea who  you were dealing with and if they are "legitimate" or not, it is impossible to say if you have any security breaches.  But if you are worried then doing something as simple as changing your passwords may be in order.   If you don't have any anti-virus or anti-malware scanners on your computer, this may also be a good time to get them.
