I am in the process of trying to cancel my order so I just have my experience about Detech so far and it's not good. First of all, their business practices are questionable because they target married couples with children and won't even talk to you if you don't have your spouse present. They used free tickets to Disney on Ice (of course to lure people with children) to get into my home. The lady that called to tell us we 'won' was persistent, which should have been my first clue. She called three times because the first two times, I was not home. When she made the appointment for the first presentation, I said my husband should be home then. "He HAS to be present." When she came I wasn't home yet and my husband called saying you have to get here NOW, she won't start unless you're here. Anyway, she used scare tactics which kind of upset me. I was not happy that my 6 year old was sitting with us and she showed a picture of a a bed with the imprint of a little girl that had died in a fire, you could see the imprint of her hair and having been nursing her bottle before the fire killed her. I didn't really like that she kept talking about all the children that have died in fires because normal fire detectors didn't give enough time or even go off at all. Since it was for 2 tickets and we are a family of 5, she said we could 'qualify' for 3 (how convenient) more tickets if we sit for another presentation of their products. 'You don't have to buy anything and you get to keep the tickets whether you buy or not.' Well how could I refuse?

The guy comes and is very nice, very friendly, very informative but just a bit too smooth. Everything seemed very rehearsed even down to him asking for water since he used it in his presentation. Going to every room and pointing out hazards, all the while not we have not said yes we will buy but he's writing everything down like we have already agreed to purchase. And when that subject WAS brought up, he just sat there waiting for an answer. So we only had like 2 minutes to decide, and when I said sure we would like some heat detectors especially, THAT is when he said ok it's going to be $2,800. Yes, almost three thousand dollars just for 9 detectors, one fire extinguisher, a base pad and an escape ladder. I am sure their products work like they say they do, but luring people and then charging them an arm and a leg for these products is predatory if you ask me. Scare tactics and crazy statistics (like there being a fire every 12 seconds, really? And the death rate sky rocketting? I goggled it and it's not, it's actually going down according to the fire administration  http://www.usfa.fema.gov/statistics/estimates/trend_overall.shtm )

Honestly, just thinking about them using these tickets, which the guy even said they get in bulk, is shady. It's not a drawing, it's fishing if everyone gets tickets and they are going it just to get in your house and scare you to death with pictures and statistics, and a video of what looks like people from the 80's that lost their daughter. We don't need to see parents from that long ago (before better detectors were put out) crying and pulling on our heart strings. It's deceitful. Now we'll see if they actually do refund our money without hassle, I'm doubtful.

My Detech Experiance

AUTHOR: Bert - ()

POSTED: Tuesday, April 16, 2013

I was at my towns home show and saw there bothand decided to register the gift was the reason I thought it maybe a good idea to get some advice. The rep came out and did his presentation which included a dvd presentation.

After looking at everything my wife and I realized we were not prepared if a fire broke out and we have a small child so we definitely needed to do something that was a fact I could not ignore. He came back the next day after the first presentation he came back to show me the products and I was impressed with the heat detector which I believe is a high quality detector. I thought the prices were high and I could do better so we agreed I would give him a deposit and I had ten days to decide if I wanted them.

I did alot of research over the next couple of days and found another solution that was I felt was a better alternative for me. I contacted them and explained it to him and they were very nice and told me they have not deposited my check so he would just send it to me and asked if I would mind letting his rep come out during the day while at lunch to remove the detector because he is making sales calls at night. I thought that was fair and made the appointment. I save quite a bit of money whih I am going to reinvest into my family safety.

But I am not upset at Detech they actually made us aware of an issue we needed to correct plus when you purchse there equipment you get 20 + year warranty. Mine will be three. Detch call them if and issue mine solution I have to call the manufature and try to get it resolved. They will come out and assist you with maintenance. I will either talk with customer support or try to figure it out. So with Detech also pay for a service which I choose not to. I can not call them a rip off, because they did exactly everything they said they would do with no hassles

Important Facts

AUTHOR: Michael J. Hafeman - (United States of America)

POSTED: Tuesday, February 26, 2013

The person that wrote this received her money back in full, along with her original uncashed check the day after notifying our office.  There are many, many families that want this protection and we always honor the cancellation period for those few that do not.

Some that view this may be considering our quality fire protection and you deserve to know the whole story.  I would like to address a few misconceptions in the letter.  This lady questions our targeting married couples with children.  We do not target any particular group and have customers in all age categories however; it is true that children under the age of 5 are the number one group that dies in home fires and fire is the leading cause of death in the home for children under 17.  Therefore, most of the people that invite us to show them our educational program are in the age range that need it the most, although we never turn anyone away from our free educational program.

Yes, if married, we do require the husband and wife to be home together.  It is a company policy to not enter someones home unless both are there.  This is done for the protection of our Educators and I believe the reasons are obvious in todays world.  Most people appreciate this policy.

Our program is scripted and our Educators are required to stick to it.  Families make life-saving decisions based on our information and we want to be sure it is up to date and accurate.  None of our representatives carry any pictures of burn victims and are not allowed to use scare tactics.  We understand that the truth about fire is scary enough and we dont try to embellish it, but we do feel obligated to present the facts and the truth. The most deceiving thing we could do is to discuss fire as though it were not a serious and very scary issue.

Our Educator did offer this family 3 extra tickets so the whole family could go to the show together.  I do not see how that can be a bad thing. We thought it was a nice gesture that we often make to families with more children.  We do purchase them in bulk for a discount.  Our local office alone paid for and gave away over 500 tickets to Disney on Ice.

As for the $2800 price tag, yes there are some protection packages that could cost that, but the average is much less and the amount purchased is totally up to each customer.  Our Consultants are trained to quote the recommendations from the NFPA-72-2010 codebook.  It is up to the customer what is purchased.  We absolutely stand by our prices as the lowest for this quality of protection and service.

As for our statistics being questioned, such as a fire every 12 seconds.  That is simply math.  Each year there are approximately 2 million reported fires.  The NFPA estimates that every decade, each family will also have 3 unreported fires.  If you do the math that is about 5500 fires per dayor one every 12 seconds.

Next, about the death rate skyrocketing.  That is not part of our educational program and it is not true.  But the statistic quoted from the USFA is perhaps deceiving, as it is not the same as what we discuss.  The death rate they are referring to is how many deaths per population.  The statistic we quote and believe is more relevant is that the death rate per fire, which has not changed in almost 40 years and is actually trending upward.  In other words, fires are deadlier than they have ever been, which is true, and a product of the dramatically reduced escape time.

I am sorry that this family did not want our protection, and mostly regret that they felt deceived in any way, but they were given 100% of their money back and the alarms were removed.  They still were sent the tickets as promised.

It is my sincere hope that anyone reading this will welcome our Educators and Consultants to show you our complete program and you can decide for yourself if our protection makes sense for you. Not everyone buys every car they test drive!  We understand and respect that.  What is most important for your fire protection is that you get the facts, so you can make an informed decision for yourself.  Should you have any questions about any statistics or tactics, please call our headquarters at 262-236-0123.  We will be happy to get you the source of all of our information.  We are very proud of our mission and service to our tens-of-thousands of customers.
