We rented a car for the week-end in Long Island (NY) at Enterprise. Our fare included drop off in any Enterprise location. This was confirmed by the pick-up agency and over the phone by Enterprise when we called to double check that they will accept the return in the city of New York (Manhattan). Entreprise confirmed that we were entitled to do so and that every Enterprise office has to accept the car.

We had the bad surprise to face a categorical refusal from the Enterprise assistant branch manager from Manhattan, west 83rd street due to an internal "Enterprise policy" according to which no return would be accepted in any Manhattan location unless the car belonged to their own fleet (they have no space in their car park). We had to return it to one of the NYC airport. Extra day charge plus taxi fare at our charge. Of course no client-friendly attention such as they would offer someone to drop off the car there or try to find an arrangement.

We did not misunderstood the terms of the sales and that we were really entitled to return the car to this location as another man was in the same situation as us. His fare also included drop off in any location and he was explicitly told that any location in Manhattan was fined for the return. This man just wanted to leave the keys on their counter with the contract and leave the car in the street. He was told by the assistant branch manager that he could do so but contract and keys had to be left in the car...and of course in case of damage or if the car was stolen it was still under his liablity.... This man loosing patience finally returned the car to La Guardia. Enterprise La Guardia told him that there is no such Enterprise policy and no Enterprise in Manhattan could refuse the drop off of his car...

We were a little more stubborn and called the police. When the police arrived, we were finally offered to have our car dropped at the airport for $50 to be paid in cash. This was the best solution for us as we had absolutely no time to go to the airport. We are still waiting for the receipt of this extra $50.

We were told by this Enterprise agency that they have this problem all the time. It nevertheless looks like Enterprise internal communication would not have changed and they would still continue to rent you cars with drop-off everywhere, including Manhattan or it is an abuse from this Enterprise Manhattan office....
