When this new store opened up we went there with two of our vehicles. While waiting in the lobby heard the same sales pitch several times and then had it tried on me. I am not an automotive novice as I was a fully certified general mechanic when younger. The person at the desk says. "your brake fluid is very dark and needs to be replaced". I saw this same sales pitch on almost every vehicle there no matter what the mileage or year of vehicle.

Of course this is ridiculous. Then I started to hear that our neighbors were getting their brake fluid changed for over $125 at this place. What a rip off! I spent 25 years working for three auto manufacturers and have seen it all many times before. A person on commission, over selling...

shop/dealer owners turning a blind eye, and then counselling their service managers to raise the average repair order sales to $400 'like the other owners in my peer group'... here is the plain and simple rule: follow the manufacturer's normal service guide. No more. NEVER change oil at 3,000 miles... it is stupid, costly and harmful to the environment, you don't need to change the filter with every oil change. These are all lube and tune myths perpetuated by writers that are not really scientifically knowledgeable.

scientific evidence is against you

This is the same old story that lube centers want people to believe and what I would expect from a lube center. There have been many studies to completely contradict the 3,000 oil and filter change. I suggest that you read up on these studies that are easily obtained via the internet. I remember one such study based upon New York cabs that had a very large sample size over an extended time period and many variables. Guess what? the factory recommended guidelines left engines in just as good of condition as the lube center 3,000 program. As for the 'severe' acid build up on cold mornings... that too is way over blown by scientific repeatable studies. The time, and expense it takes to be on the lube center program never will have any return on investment. Not to mention the many other things they try to sell that are completely worthless. They prey on stupidity and they imply to owners that they are somehow not taking care of their vehicle if they do not agree with all of their recommendations... trying to extract $$$. That is why the state of California is now at war with lube centers and their over-selling of services.

I agree with you on one point only:
The idea that anyone is selling brakefluid changes on "darkness" of the fluid is assinine in this day and age. Only the approved sampling method should be used.

The rest is dangerous missinformation:
Oil Changes @ 3000 is cheap insurance for people that do not to oil sampling to determine how far to stretch the interval. Remember most North American Automobiles short trip and never, ever, warm up correctly. Incredibly hard on oil and thus engines.

Not changing the filter allows a good quantity of acid and other contaminants to remain and contaminate the new oil, shortening its life. And the fact is we change oil not for dirt, but other contaminents, HARMFULL contaminants.
