Lone Star Softub -- Just Say NO !

The Softub website quotes you can enjoy your hot tub daily for less than $10 a month...

My bill DOUBLED from $140's to $280's....in the first month.

Lone Star showed no concern or interest....even though clearly this is not the anticipated $10 / mos I was led to believe would happen.

It continued to rise the 2nd month, exceeding $500 in the third...

That's when I unplugged it.

The dealer rep has REFUSED to even take a look at it to see if something's wrong with it. I had an electrician come out and inspect the outlet and wiring -- and confirmed there are no problems there.

I even contacted the Softub manufacturer, who advised me -- that even though they've received a number of complaints re: Lone Star Softub, I still have to deal with them.

So....I'm stuck completing payment on a tub I can't afford to run....and couldn't, in good conscience....even give to a friend, let alone sell it.

My advise is: look elsewhere for a hot tub.

As soon as I can get this paid for, and get rid of it....I will too!

Corporate response

AUTHOR: Nicco - (United States of America)

POSTED: Tuesday, February 22, 2011

The claims made by this customer contained in the complaint below are materially incorrect.  This customer purchased this spa from us in April of 2010.  The customer financed the tub for a term of 12 months.  The customer made one payment in May of 2010 and did not make any further payments.  The customer blamed their default on not getting their tax return for a period of 4 months.  The customer would not even pay a small amount and then became unresponsive.   The customer called the corporate office where the Softub is manufactured, they contacted us where we then made contact with the customer.   Softub has been manufactured since the mid 80’s and is known for its patented heat recovery process.  The tub takes its heat from a special set of stainless coils that recover heat from the motor.  The fact that it is not as efficient as a 220 spa because it is a 110 is incorrect.  This is true of most electrical products but not the Softub.  The Softub does not have a heater like the traditional hard spas. It has a special insulated frame and lid to keep the heat in as well. The softub is a true 110 spa which pulls approximately 10 amps while it is running.  The unit will run 2-3 times per day for 15 minutes depending on the outside ambient temperature. Several hundred thousand customers will attest to the quality and efficiency of this marvelous tub. The claim that it uses more power the hotter it gets outside is baseless. The energy bill at my home also tripled during this time frame as did the energy bill at our corporate officesMy modest home’s 2010 energy billsMay-113 dollars, June -233 dollars, July- 363 dollars. This is caused by the hot South Texas Summer and that I like to use the Air Conditioner , which I am sure is why this customers bill went up as well.  You could poll almost anyone in Houston who should have the same linear change in their energy bills due to the record high heat. The claim that we refused to look at the spa is fictitious.  We specifically told the customer that we would honor our warranty when they complained of this “power problem”.  They did not like that answer as it would still involve them paying for the item they agreed to purchase “I even contacted the Softub manufacturer, who advised me -- that even though they've received a number of complaints re: Lone Star Softub, I still have to deal with them.” This comment is patently false, We have received 1 complaint in ten years and it was from this person who is trying to get out of there obligation to pay for something that they purchased.

Something wrong

AUTHOR: Ramjet - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, January 18, 2011

Wow, there is something wrong with that thing or it's a poor design.

We have a 400 gallon hot tub running on 110VAC. Our electric bill increase was within our normal monthly variation. Of course it is costing us something but it is low enough that we don't feel it. My sister also has a hot tub of the same brand and she has the same experience. Incidentally, we live in the northern USA, it's in the 20s right now and our hot tub is outside on our patio.

There is apparently a large difference in the efficiency of various brands. I'm not even going to mention the brand here because I don't want to get into brand arguments.

Anyway, it seems like there must be something wrong with yours in some way, that can't be normal.

My Experience

Any major appliance that uses 110 voltinstead of 220 volt is gonna "eat your lunch" and I'm gonna bet that softside hot tub uses 110 instead of 220. That electrician should have told you that. I've got a 600 gallon hot tub that stays at a nice 104 and runs me about $30 or $40 more per month. See if the pump and heater can be converted over to 220V or try and sell it.
