I run a small shop and sold BG products. If you read their literature they claim to warranty your engine, transmission and everything but the kitchen sink. I was going to use their diesel additive in my diesel truck. My rep advised me to run some system cleaner first. I bought it and put it in the truck as directed. Before the tank had used half, the truck developed running problems. I had to take the injection pump off and have it repaired. My truck had 95ooo miles. The pump shop advised me that the cleaner was too dry and caused the plungers in the pump were sticking.

They also told me that pump should have lasted 5000000 miles. I contacted the BG rep.Of course his product had never caused any problems and it had never done anything like that but he would check into it. Never heard from him until I tracked him down. Then he told me my area had been sold to another rep and it was the new reps problem. The new rep cried and whined because he didn't sell me the product. Eventually he paid about one third of the 2400.00 bill. I only asked him to cover the parts bill and I would cover the rest. He wouldnt even do that!

I stopped selling their products and would warn you against it. They talk big until it is time for them to stand behind it.

BG hit and miss

AUTHOR: HB - (USA)

POSTED: Thursday, December 24, 2015

BG Products makes some good products and some not so good. For example, their fuel additives, like 44k are ok pour in the tank cleaners, though overpriced and not the best on the market.  While their "universal" transmission fluid is not the best choice for sure. They  actually make a radiator leak repair product that has wood sawdust in it......yes wood, it glops out of the bottle like mud. The MOA is nothing special, they warranty for everything? LOL

The heart of BG is its distributors, who make all the margin on the overpriced products.

Let Me Clarify

The person writing the rebuttal and claiming to be a BG employee seems to have a reading comprehension problem. We ARE a professional repair facility and have been in the business for over 25 years. We do not do internal repairs so we removed the pump and took it to a repair facility that specializes in repairing those type of pumps.

Let me preface this by teaching you a name that maybe you have heard of, Robert Bosch. Bosch for short is pretty much the gold standard for fuel injection. Bosch was designing and selling fuel injection in Europe before the U.S. knew what injection was.

Since the pump was a Bosch pump and Bosch designed and manufactured the pump we took the pump to their authorized repair facility. The facility tore down the pump, determined the cause of failure and then repaired the pump. Now, as far as "technical foundation" for the failure , we took it to the people who designed and manufactured the pump for the repair. You are right if you needed Barbara Walters and 20/20 there then we sorely missed the mark. For the rest of us, the opinion of the designer and manufacturer will suffice.

If you want to throw around the 2007 ULSD requirement, please research it first. When the ULSD requirement was set at 15 ppm, that means that fuel is not allowed to have a sulphur content of 15ppm. You also need to know that when sulphur is removed from fuel it causes the fuel to be dry and have low lubricity qualities. So being under the 15ppm limit causes low lubricity. The company that you claim to work for sells a lubricity additive. The ULSD HARMS this type of pump instead of helps it.

The only emotions involved here was the ANGER exhibited when BG Products failed to stand up and do the right thing. By the way, this event was over three years ago and the truck has ran great ever since. This pretty much ruins your collapsed fuel line or plugged random fuel system part.

No Technical Foundation for complaint

I fully understand that the emotions of the vehicle owner are running high due to the unplanned failure of his fuel pump. However I would like to point out that the direct cause of failure for his warrantied fuel pump were not professionally ascertained. While the flippant comment that the BG product was "too dry" and ruined the pump seem to be credible, they are refuted by the fact that the BG fuel product in question complies with both the Federal Low Sulfur Fuel limit

Since no professional tear-down of the pump was undertaken and hence no proper cause-of-failure established, there is no real way to discover why this pump failed to meet its expected service life.

Unfortunately this customer was frustrated by the failure of the pump, and in my opinion was grossly misled by the representative who did not honor the pump warranty. I consider it a great testimony to the integrity of BG Products, Inc. that their company representative did in fact pay 33% of the repair bill, when rightfully there was no direct evidence to associate the pump failure to the BG product at all!

Many times pumps like this can fail do to fuel starvation by partially restricted fuel intake filters, or due to moisture in the fuel, which can adversely reduce the lubricity of the fuel and cause pump scoring. In a nutshell, there are many reasons why a pump may fail without obvious cause. Blaming something due to Murphy's Law (namely...it was the last thing I did) is a reckless way to assign blame. A more professional approach would be to gather hard evidence (and not verbal conjecture). This is something that this unfortunate customer did not do.

In the automotive repair business it is all too common for one service provider to blindly blame previous providers with nothing more than their mere opinions. The lack of evidence supporting the comment that the BG product was "too dry" are absent. This only goes to show the misguided ignorance of the "so called" service professional who uttered these comments.

BG Products retains a very high reputation for quality within the automotive service sector. They are approaching 50 years in the business, and remain the #1 service provider 3 to 1 over all other companies. They simply could not obtain this reputation for high quality and dependable service without the trust of the general public and our professional shops.

If this customer would have dug deeper to discover the root of his fuel pump problem he would have soon realized that BG Products was not the cause for his failure…period.

Ignorance is bliss they say. Instead I forward that ignorance can be replaced by knowledge, when emotions are set aside and true science prevails.
