I cancelled an AMEX merchant card processing account for my business over a year ago.  Since then, there were no charges from AMEX to my business checking account.  On Nov. 5, 2012, a charge appeared on my business checking account statement for $7.95.
This is how it appeared on my checking account statement...
PREAUTHORIZED ACH DEBIT
AMERICAN EXPRESS COLLECTION

121105  XXXXXXXXXX (this 10 digit number is used by AMEX to identify your business when you call)
If this happens to you, call 800-528-5200.
AMEX will claim that you did not close your account and that is the reason you received the $7.95 charge.  They will tell you that you should call your merchant processing company to notify them that you closed your AMEX merchant account.  Then they will say that the $7.95 charge will be reversed within 3 days.  I trust that it will be.  I did close my account directly with AMEX over a year ago and I specifically remember it since my merchant processor said he could not close the AMEX account for me since AMEX insists that customers call them directly.  If my account was not closed over a year ago, why would this be the first time any charges from AMEX have appeared on my checking account?  This stinks like an AMEX merchant scam.  They know that most business owners are not going to notice a rogue $7.95 charge and therefore, AMEX will be making a lot of money fraudulently.
