I am an independent photographer in New York City who has not been paid for photographs
taken this past August 27th, during HPNG's Third Annual Latino Leadership Conference.
In the public sphere, HPNG's mission is to assist Latinos in networking to find jobs. Privately,
though, the reality is very different, since the organization's President and CEO, Ali T. Curi, has defiantly cheated me in business.
I covered the August 27th event as agreed, photographing Mr. Curi and participants, from 10
a.m. To 7 p.m. I delivered 370 images to Mr. Curi. Mr. Curi posted my images on line, but refuses to pay my fee.
When I delivered the images to Mr. Curi, he gave me a check. Then, Mr. Curi stopped payment on
the check, explaining that he had been a victim of identity theft, and he would pay me by the following week. That payment has not yet happened!
I contacted Mr. Curi a number of times, requesting payment. His only response was to laugh, and
dared me to take him to court.
So I took Mr. Curi to court, and he has been summoned twice (on October 16 and December 4). He
did not shown up either time, and the physical address he has on file simply does not exist. I posted the court date on his Facebook page, and sent it to his email. Even though he replied saying he had gotten
the notice he still did not show up in court. He was again summoned for February 2013, and this time, he received the summons face to face, at HPNG's recent holiday party.
It doesn't make sense that HPNG is accepting grant dollars to further their networking mission,
when the organization's CEO does not act honestly in business.

In response to Ali T. Curi's memo of February 5, 2013:
I thought my problem with HPNG will be solved after 8 months and 3 summonses requesting Ali T. Curi appearance in court.
At the December 2013 HPNG Christmas party, Ali, President and CEO of HPNG, received the summons through a third party who handed it straight to him.
On February 21, when he was in front of the judge he acknowledged that I did a VERY GOOD job, and that he did not had any problems with my photo services and the final results. He also admitted that he used my images for his website immediately.
Given his acknowledgement of my work, the judge asked Ali if he would be willing to pay, and Ali answered in the affirmative. The court then issued a judgement in my favor, stating that Ali T. Curi had to pay my bill within 30 days.
Now, it's already more than 60 days and the HPNG President and CEO still hasn't paid his bills, and doesn't respond to messages. It's interesting that he is trying to paint me in a negative light – I have never had such an experience with any other client. In fact, people hire me not only for my exceptional work, but also for my low-keyed personality. THIS IS NOT ABOUT A POOR BAHAVIOR OR POOR TASTE OR BAD FORM. This is only about the unscrupulous business practices of HPNG's President and CEO. I wish that I could report that this is a one-time incident with Mr. Curi, but unfortunately, I have come to discover that he has cheated others, as well.
I see now that Ali T. Curi is a brave man! It's one thing to brush off a photographer, and quite another to ignore the law.
I recognize that it is not easy to build and maintain an organization for 10 years, as HPNG has done. It is sad for me that an organization with such potential like HPNG would risk its future through improper actions of management.
I will continue to keep you updated about this situation, until it is satisfactorily resolved.
