1. A new car SHOULD have more frequent oil changes. Engines need to break in, and lots of metal shavings, and general junk slough off a brand new motor. You did not indicate type of car, engine, etc., so it's hard to judge.
2. The other person is correct, ALL newer cars should use synthetic oil. You change oil less often, saving you money. Your engine stays cleaner, saving you money. Your car lasts longer and gets better gas mileage, saving you money. Also, we waste a LOT less irreplaceable fossil fuels and have to recycle less. Don't cheap out with the single most important aspect of your vehicles maintenance.
3. Don't assume your air filter did not need to be replaced. It's UNLIKELY, but possible. Did you ask to see the old filter? Did you say NO to the new filter? Did you ask them to re-install the original filter? Or did you meekly accept the situation and go home and complain?
It is YOUR car, take charge, be informed, and make your own decisions.

MOST new cars REQUIRE a semi-synthetic or full synthetic oil to meet warranty requirements, and sometimes emissions requirements. You will also get better fuel mileage, and longer engine life with a quality full synthetic oil.
Doing cheap oil changes will cost you more in the long run when you consider higher levels of engine wear, and decreased fuel mileage.
AND, there is no requirement to do 3000 mile oil changes. MOST manufacturers specify oil change intervals at 5000 to 7500 miles in todays vehicles, especially those using full synthetic.
Don't put cheap oil in your new car. That is just stupid.
