In 2010, It was advised to open several accounts to invest $$ wisely (husband/wife life insurance policies and an annuity). Was advised at time of opening annuity - we needed $10k in account before seeing anything back from it. We opened each account with specified amount with annuity at $1k.
Since then, we had to borrow against the annuity earlier this year and putting funds back in slowly but seems not fast enough... After recent election, the proposed tax laws caused us to evaluate our various holdings and investments. After two month of dodging the issue of liquidating the annuity - I attempted to push the issue and got my husband involved with NO AVAIL to accomplish task. The simple task of closing out annuity - paying the fees and taxes and apply the any proceeds left to HUBBY's Life Insurance policy as prepaid premium installments.
Corporate office claims we need agent to process the claim/issue and awaiting for supervisor of agent to respond - with NO positive contact nor action to accomplish task. I would believe it would take 5-10 minutes to fax forms for request and signature and return them to agent for processing (estimated time perhaps 24 hours) and than process completed at corporate office.
It seems we are being given the run around for a simple task to close out an account. It makes me wonder if there is a scam and/or Federal Government has changed the rules without notice!!!
In past, I have had many dealings with the Knights of Columbus - and all very positive and rewarding events. Since in S. Florida - it seems that the organization is a totally different beast; and truth to be told, I do not understand that concept.

update for FRATERNAL SERVICE ORGANIZATION providing FINANCIAL SERVICES
AUTHOR: KBroz - (United States of America)

After taken a day or so to calm down from the call and speaking with hubby - his desire was to work out an agreement with to keep life insurance policies active.
12/20/2012 - I called the corporate office to cancel out the policies as per request of agent and the agent assigned to take such calls was concerned that we did not have a plan nor replacement policies. I told him that I was not looking forward to make payments for things that we were not being able to use and I/we had every intention to leave a donation for the catholic church but not in the amount of the insurance policies. He understood and suggested that we keep the policies active, change payment arrangement from monthly electronic payment to quarterly payment system - and I was to call in with payment and/or mail in payment. If I need servicing on the policies - I was to call the supervisor to the local area or the corporate office. I did state I will call the corporate office.
So the matter is in a workable resolution presently - but my hubby is going to to local organization and inform the officers of the organization of incident as he is a MEMBER of the organization and he wants to clear the air...
I am afraid the damage is done. People working in the Customer Service arena to provide services to the public need to keep personal feelings aside and keep personal feelings out of the equation. In return, I, as many customers, should do diligent research/investigation before jumping into an agreement of such importance as RETIREMENT-FINANCIAL ESTATE PLANNING.
Lesson has been learned on my end.
Respectfully,
K

FINALLY - angry phone call by agent gets some results !!!!!

Just received a phone call by original agent (peeved as I might add)... As he claims he is sending the paperwork to close any and/or all of the accounts. He added that he never wanted us to make contact with him again - well that makes it difficult if a claim for other policies need to be processed. Going through such extremes to get him to close out one account makes me wonder what would happen if we had something more serious go badly -- such as death.
I believe I may just close out all the accounts due to the reviews I have read a various sites concerning HARDSHIPS in dealing with AGENTS and/or POLICY CLAIMS/PAYMENTS. This is something I did not want to ever encounter again. I can assure you that I will take matters of such importance with more diligent handling of duty.
I do hope this experience shared will inform others of possible problems...
And as I have stated in original posting that I have never had a bad experience as I just have experienced - in recent days. Thank you for allowing me to share...
Thank you for your courtesy.
Respectfully,
K

FINALLY - angry phone call by agent gets some results !!!!!

Just received a phone call from ORIGINAL agent (quite peeved to say the least)... as he claims he is having paperwork sent to us to do with and/or all accounts as we wish and requested that we make NO MORE CONTACT with him ever again. So that will make it difficult to keep any of our accounts open - according to the rules of Corporate Office.
So I/we may go ahead and close out all accounts with the Knights of Columbus as from reading other reviews from various sites - it does bother me that there may be problem in getting response if there was something more serious that happens. My concern is that if - closing one account was a serious issue for delay; my concern is - what happens if there is truly an emergency such as death?
MMM something to think about when dealing with insurance companies. Thank you for allowing me to share this experience to inform others. I will know how to deal with accounts of such importance more diligently.
Thank you for your courtesy.
Respectfully,
K
