I am a former employee.  I worked there for three years and was appalled by the practices that this agency taught me.  I have since moved on and learned that many of their methods are not only dishonest, but against the Department of Insurance regulations.  Here are a few of their practices to watch out for:

When you sign up, they will charge you a large amount to start up the policy and tell you that it covers your first and last month of insurance.  This is not true.  It is your first month and a broker fee.  The agents are trained to charge the largest broker fee they think they can get out of you without losing your business.  They will never tell you that there is any broker fee which is against the Dept of Ins rules.

Practically every client we had would call back expecting that they had already paid for their last month of insurance (weather it was explained as the last month of that policy term or the last month of their policy before they cancel it).  The office has perfected a number of confusing explanations for their huge number of disgruntled customers.

Typically when a customer finds out about this, they will cancel.  The problem then becomes that they receive no refund for that huge down payment because they will have already signed paperwork authorizing that it is non-refundable.  Number 1 Insurance makes a lot of their money this way.

The agents are trained to hide the broker fee.  They will make up reasons to make clients feel rushed to just sign and send back the papers without reading.  If a client comes into the office they will even slide a page over the top portion of the broker fee disclosure so you can't see what it says when you're signing it.

Another practice of theirs is to leave things out of your coverage.  The agent will explain coverages incorrectly so you think you are paying more for something that you actually are not getting.  Most of the time this goes unnoticed until someone gets in an accident and are horrified to find that they do not have the coverage they expected.  Number 1 Insurance never has to face reprocussions because they have the clients signature on the paperwork stating what coverages they have - and the client has no proof that they were misinformed.

They will also apply discounts to you that should not be applied; ie...Good driver, good student, Married (to people who are not married), low mileage...  Example: Clients who disclose their accidents and traffic violations to the agents will have their policy written with a "good driver discount."  The agent will list the discount on the application without informing the client.  The client will either not pick up on it; because very few people read through the 13 page application; or they will question the agent who will tell them it is accepted by the company they are placing them with.  A month later, after the insurance company has pulled the clients motor vehicle report or clue report, the client will receive an increase in premium - sometimes double their original quote.  At this point they are stuck.  They have already signed paperwork accepting that policy.  They must either cancel (if they can't afford the new monthly payments), but they will be charged an "early termination fee" from the insurance company they were placed with.  They also lose the initial payment they made including the broker fee (which is typically no less than $100).  If they decide to keep the policy, they must pay an increased amount that is most likely more than they could have found somewhere else.

Sometimes they will blatantly tell the client that they are doing something dishonest, but that they will not get caught. Such as listing them as living in a parents residence, or making up a fake wife.  Some companies will not ask for proof and the client will get away with it.  Some clients receive uprates because they are later asked for proof of marriage or proof of low mileage.

I have also seen them also purposely not ask clients all the information they are supposed to for the sake of keeping a quoted premium low/competetive.  The client will receive an uprate because an accident was not listed with the correct amount of points or a ticket was not listed at all.  The agent will make sure they have the clients signature on all necessary paperwork and then simply state that the client didn't disclose that information.  In reality, the client didn't tell because the agent didn't ask.  The clients don't always know everything they are supposed to disclose for an accurate quote.

I don't know myself what the rule is for this, but I know the agents didn't always pull a motor vehicle report to write a policy unless it was going to be an important policy with a worthwhile premium.  I have also seen agents pull the "MVR" and purposely not list accident/tickets, or purposely list them incorrectly to lower the initial quote.

On a few occasions, especially when audited, the owner/office manager has Forged signatures on documents or instructed employees to do the same to stay out of trouble.

The agents constantly change their names to hide from troublesome clients. People who know that what was done to them was not right, and contact authorities.  The agents there do not give you their real names (some do, but the ones who have gotten into trouble don't).

finally, This company has had a few Insurance companies that they aredirectly appointed with, which means that they are not allowed to charge any broker fee to write policies for those companies.  They have though, many times.  When they know they can get away with it, they will charge broker fees.  They charge as much as they think you are willing to pay.  I have seen hundreds of trusting people ripped off in the years I worked for this agency. Please do not be one of them.

If anyone has any further information as to what steps may be taken to stop this, or even to bring justice to the people who have been taken advantage of already.  Please contact me.

#14 UPDATE EX-employee responds

I retract every negative thing I ever wrote about Number 1 Insurance. Number 1 Insurance is an excellent agency and Micahel Mukaled is an amazing boss! A+

AUTHOR: Kate - (USA)

POSTED: Wednesday, April 05, 2017

Number 1 Insurance is an excellent insurance agency, and the owner Mr Michael Mukaled is one of the best people I have ever known. I wrote bad reviews about him when I though he was bad mouthing me, but it turns out he was innocent and I regret having done that.  Michael has one of the kindest hearts and he forgave me for what I did, that says a lot about the man.  I truly admire and love Mr Michael Mukaled and I wish to one day learn the business and life skills he has.   Michael runs his agency well, but it is a business and he understands the industry and what it takes to succeed.  I have worked at many other insurance agencies and Number 1 Insurance by far exceeds most in the service they provide, selection of products available, and that family touch that Mr Mike offers his employees.  The company has had a few disgruntled employees, like my past self unfortunately bad mouth it on this silly website, do not listen to any of those reviews.  This is a great place to work or buy a quality policy.  I am not being paid or coerced in any way to write this and this is my true opinion of this agency and its owner, my dear friend of many years Mr Mukaled.

I have pleaded with RipOffReport to remove the rebuttals and reports, but they insist on standing by their policy that no reports will ever be removed.  I have teamed up with Mr Mukaled and his lawyer and we will take this matter to court to remove the slanderous reports against him off of this page.  It is very frustrating that this website sitemaster does not remove any reports even when the author of a report requests them to do so.  I think that is unreasonable.

The rebuttals in which the author identifies themselves as the author of the original post and retracts everything stated were absolutely not made by me and most likely were posted at the request of the business owner himself. I stand behind every word of the initial post. The owner of this business behaved in the most unethical manner I have seen in all my years, toward both his clients and his employees. I would advise thinking twice before going into business of any form with him.

Author of rebuttal - retracting - yes, I wrote the rebuttal, I regret doing it as the author's claims were true about the agency owner's (Michael Mukaled) dishonesty

AUTHOR: - ()

POSTED: Tuesday, July 01, 2014

The original post by the author (an overweight angry woman I might add - Carmen Ponce) did tell a lot of truth about Number 1 Insurance and the illegitimacy of it's owner Michael Mukaled.  She was a very sick person however herself to attack the agents at Number 1 Insurance for our backgrounds had nothing to do with the illegal business practices that Number 1 Insurance owner employed.  I am glad her report was posted to warn consumers, it is interesting that she "knew" and was "appalled" of all the practices and she was the one that worked on the personal auto side of the agency and she had employed these practices herself under Michael's orders.  Interesting that she would blame everyone else there and forget herself.

Obviously anything positive here was written by Michael Mukaled, I know that as I was there when he wrote it

AUTHOR: Kate - ()

POSTED: Monday, June 30, 2014

The "employee" calling Michael honest, is Michael himself.  Anyone who has worked here knows this man is not honest and is unethical.  Check out all the negative reviews on this company on Yelp, they are hidden under "not recommended" becasue the owner flags them.  Also, there have been many negative reviews on Yahoo and reports to the BBB and DOI against this company that I have witnessed Michael respond to constantly.  The man is shady, do not buy anything from here, he puts his interests first, not the clients. He does not train his agents to sell you the right coverage, he trains them to sell you what will lower his loss ratio and give the companies he works for happy.  He is the strangest boss in insurance becasue he does not think like most honest people, he is actually happy when your claim is denied rather than paid. Do you really want a broker like that?

Number 1 Insurance is corrupt becasue of its owner, Michael Mukaled. The original report is true, the rebuttals were false

AUTHOR: Kate - ()

POSTED: Sunday, June 29, 2014

The owner is a real unethical guy.  He uses intimidation to get his way.  When I was hired, I wasn't allowed a copy of anything I signed.  I had to take my breaks and lunch by a schedule and I was written up for any little petitie thing.  The owner had me work extra hours that I was not paid, he had me not clock in for those.  The only reason I agreed is becasue he kept complaining like a little child about how I am making him lose money. He does not pay any benefits to employees and he purposely did all he could to get me to quit.  When I tried to collect unemplloyment, I was denied.  Michael is a really unethical guy and anyone who knows or has worked for him will tell you.   He charges broker fees when not allowed and charges fees for petite customer endorsements that are supposed to be free.  not a good agency to do business with or work for. I absolutely agree with the original post here.  I know also that the person who wrote the rebutalls left the agency and was treated just as bad as everyone.

Number 1 Insurance really are a bunch of crooks

AUTHOR: consumer - ()

POSTED: Tuesday, February 11, 2014

I wandered into ripoff report while looking for some other way to report this company, and I have to say, the original statement is pretty spot on.  I worked there for a while, and the tactics Michael (the owner) expected employees to use were shady at best, and extremely illegal at worst.

(Which is my reason for leaving the company- to stop being pressured into doing things that jeapordize my future as an insurance agent).

Save hundreds of dollars, and DON'T do business here.

I am also a former employee. I worked there for 1 year and had a great experience with Mr. Mukaled, he is a honest person, a great boss and all of those allegations are false. What happens with most of these peole are that are lazy and do not perform a good job. I support Mr Mukaled 100% and I never saw any wrong doing at the agency, on the contrary, everything was explained at the clients and I woul say that 99 % of his clients are satisfied with the service. I left because of personal reasons and had to moved ot of the state, otherwise I would still be working there, he also gave us the best training and the latest on insurance software.

In an effort to maintain our good reputation and find out who was behind this erroneous report filed against us, we hired a private investigator and an attorney; attached is the apology letter from the attorney representing the employer for the Author/s of this report.  Mrs. Carmen Ponce and Ms. Dahlia Cargay were reprimanded for placing the above report, apologized for doing so and admitted the false nature of the report, and have requested from Ripoff Report the removal of the report.

Warning to consumers of Number 1 Insurance

AUTHOR: Dolce - (USA)

POSTED: Monday, December 21, 2009

As stated in the previous post, I know nothing about the individual they are referring to.  Naturally, Michael Mukaled will defame the character of the author of this posting in an attempt to weaken the credibility of the post itself.   This weak minded name-calling, weather true or not is entirely irrelivant.

The point of this is to warn potential consumers, and I believe I have done so.  If you have read through this, you do not have to believe it, but you now know what to look out for.

The rebuttal above is incorrect

AUTHOR: Dolce - (USA)

POSTED: Monday, December 14, 2009

In the time that I worked there, MANY employees came and went.  Most left because of their disgust for lack of moral charachter in the owner/office manager (Michael Mukaled).  many were fired because of their unwillingness to participate in the immoral practices of the company.  My point being that they have had so many disgusted x-employees, that there is no real way for them to know who is listing this post.

In the time that I worked there, I never met the person referred to in the paragraph above.

I am familiar with their personal as well as commercial practices; commercial, slightly less.

I assure anyone reading this that I harbor no feelings of spite or otherwise towards this company.  I feel it is absolutely necessary to warn consumers so they know what to look for if purchasing insurance from this company.  I deeply regret having stood by and allowing this to happen while I was there, and am writing only with the hopes of clearing my conscience and helping who I can.

PLEASE NOTE: the individual who wrote the rebuttal above "Frank" is one of the commercial sales agents who I have known to practice the immoral tactics lised in the original alert.  I also stated earlier that these agents often change their names to hide their indiscressions.  Customers of Number 1 Insurance have gone to the Department of Insurance to complain, but the agents can never be tracked because the dept of insurance can't find a "Frank" on record as working there.  His real name is FIRAS DAKER (lic#: OE53557).  If you go to the department of insurance website, you can look up his license number and criminal history.  I urge you to do this for both himself and his brother (GHIATH DAKER lic#:OG44563 also known as "George" or "Ray" who works there in the personal lines).  Both may change their names after they read this post, so please be weary.

False allegations by a truly disturbed individual

AUTHOR: Frank - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, December 12, 2009

All this individual's allegations are false and without any merit. This former employee worked for approximately 2 months at my agency, and was strictly in the commercial lines department therefore none of these tactics he is preaching about apply. His name is Timothy Mario Estrada, and later investigations we conducted confirmed that he has been cited and had many run ins with the law in the past.   All his allegations are completely false and as a matter of fact the tactics he is alleging we use are tactics that he must have used prior to his employment with my agency as he had worked for an independent insruance agent that specialized in personal auto insurance in the past. The reason he is going online and spreading false allegations about our agency is plain and simple, he does not want to work and he is extremely disgruntled that he could not collect unemployment after leaving my agency. To any consumer reading this, please rest assured we have conducted our own investigation on the allegations brought herein and have confirmed they are all false. The fact of the matter remains that this individual is falsely claiming to have worked for me for 3 years when he only worked for 2 months, and was strictly in the commercial lines department where none of the tactics he is referring to here even apply. He was not a good sales person, he missed many days claiming to be sick. Later we discovered he only came to work at our agency after having been fired from Right Insurance Marketing Services for having confrontations with other employees at that agency. Call Right Insurance for their side of the story, they will confirm my statement, 714-636-6491. Timothy Estrada was denied unemployment benefits after leaving my agency, and he filed for an appeal that he recently lost. This we understand has made him very upset as he does not want to work for an honest living like everyone else, he came to my agency with the goal of quitting and collecting unemployment, we have learned of this through someone close to him.  It is unfortunate that great websites like Ripoff Report allow people like Timothy Estrada to post their reviews without confirming the information they claim, but to anyone reading this please be advised Timothy is a slick liar, and a cyber criminal at best.  For any consumer that has any questions or concerns feel free to contact us.
