I made a big mistake and ordered an alarm system for a rental house from this company. I wondered about their high pressure sales tactics and the "limited" time frame in which to install the alarm, but foolishly overlooked it. I received the alarm on December 6th. I had 20 days to install it. I contacted the firm because the only time I had to install it was this weekend. I called the customer service person, "Derrick" and spoke to "Matt" instead. Matt assured me they would be there this weekend to walk us through the installation, EVEN THOUGH it was Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.  Needless to say, when I called, the installation department was closed for the holidays. I still have one day to install this system, but when I got upset and started researching this company, I found 99 other reports of horrible service.

I am not going to install this system, I am going to send it back to them, cancel my debit card and file whatever forms are necessary to stop them from taking any more money from the bank, and I am going to the local District Attorney when they begin their scare tactics to collect money. Thank you all for your reports and I will do all I can to get the word out that these folks are totally dishonest. I can already tell they do not care a whit about their image or customer service. Better to be threatened with collections and have something to fight back with through the bank, useless Better Business Bureau and the Attorney General. As someone mentioned, local media may be of some use. I will get proof that I have returned their alarm to them, unopened and uninstalled.

Sorry, CRAZYhat....

"You, whoever you may be, offered unsolicited advice. Your tone and comments can only be taken as aggressive. Why on earth would a retired person care one whit about this situation? I believe you could find some happiness if you put your talents to better use than offering unsolicited advice. You make a very poor Devil's Advocate.  This is none of your business. I asked for a fair and equitable solution to an unfortunate situation and I have received it."

One last comment, that should make you happier, whenever you post on ROR, you are inviting any and ALL Rebuttals, even ones you don't agree with.  If you DON'T want rebuttals, DON'T POST.

This means it is NOT unsolicited advice.

Glad you worked it out, but most companies do NOT allow contract cancellation...you WERE lucky.

Gotta go now and collect my shill pay from your (former) alarm company.

Very Interesting response

Fact 1: Protect America, Inc acknowledges that I am returning alarm--yes, I have proof from a 3rd party, so even if it is refused by their office, I can prove I shipped it back with a tracking number.

Fact 2: Protect America, Inc has agreed, in writing no less, to void the contract with me.

Fact 3: Protect America, Inc accepts my paying the restocking fee for the unused item and letting the matter rest.

I believe that you presenting yourself as an authority on something you know nothing about could possibly lead to your feeling that I am attacking you. You take a very aggressive stand on this website about my "consequences" for standing up to a mafioso attitude-"You pay or we breaka your legs." I am sorry, but I do not believe this attitude could possibly constitute good customer service in most people's opinion.

You, whoever you may be, offered unsolicited advice. Your tone and comments can only be taken as aggressive. Why on earth would a retired person care one whit about this situation? I believe you could find some happiness if you put your talents to better use than offering unsolicited advice. You make a very poor Devil's Advocate.  This is none of your business. I asked for a fair and equitable solution to an unfortunate situation and I have received it.

been accused of working for.

I offered the rebuttals as an insight for you and instead you attack me....guess you'll just have to blindly do what you think is best. I neither support nor have ANY stake in this.

Can't wait for your next ROR on how they Ripped you off with the cancellation fee and nobody told you about it.

Sorry to have taken up your time, you're obviously a LOT smarter and business-wise than me. You will richly deserve what's about to happen to you.

Again I don't work for them and never have.

No, I did NOT miss your point

As you stated, NOTHING I do now is going to cancel your so-called contract. I have never heard of a company that has no cancellation policy. So there is no point in me paying another cent to you now or at any time in the future.

You do work for this company, why else would you take such an aggressive stance with me on this website? Please note that 121 reports have been filed against your company on this website, 776 at the Better Business Bureau. I am sure there are more complaints that I have not discovered yet. I believe almost any consumer is going to be very wary of your reputation. Also, your company is on a list of "alarm" company referrals, so I sent the originators of the list a letter documenting all the complaints against your company and the fact that Protect America, Inc. never let anyone out of their contracts. Consumers do have rights, believe it or not. We do have the right to chose and the right to complain about poor service.

The only reason I am returning your equipment and following procedures is so that I have documentation to send to the credit reporting bureaus.  The consequences of breaking this contract and refusing to pay you are well worth it. I have NOTHING to lose except time wasted dealing with your company. I do not care about my credit rating, 26 years of excellent credit are damaged because of a similar issue with Home Depot, and that was a $300 dispute. There is nothing to gain by continuing to deal with your company. Your $1500 charges are not going  to be paid by me. You can call Home Depot and ask them if I ever paid them for their dishonesty. The answer is no. I have nothing to lose by refusing to deal with your company. IF your customers have nothing to lose, your threats are not very powerful, are they?

"The information provided from Protect America is fine with me because I will be returning the product with a letter to cancel the so-called contract."

It is NOT a "so-called contract", it is a legally binding contract YOU signed.  The "cancellation" letter makes no difference whatsoever.  You CANNOT, arbitrarily cancel your contract..why do you suppose it's called a "contract?"

You, of course, are free to take any action you see fit, but be prepared for the consequences.

Good luck...You'll need it.

Whatever it takes to get away from Protect America

AUTHOR: jfcrzycat - (United States of America)

POSTED: Monday, December 26, 2011

The information provided from Protect America is fine with me because I will be returning the product with a letter to cancel the so-called contract. I will send you a money order for the re-stocking fee. I am sorrry that you may want to pursue the contract, because it appears this is a never-ending contract. I am positive your company does not care how you treat customers, so of course you do not care what the Better Business Bureau, the Attorney General or any one else says about your deceptive business practices. I just hope someone, somehow, shuts you down for good.

Simply returning the equipment will NOT cancel your...

THREE YEAR service agreement.  You will likely get billed a LARGE cancellation fee.

Here's from their website:

The return policy is as follows:Customer may cancel this Agreement by returning the Equipment within seven (7) days of the initial delivery date to Customer. The return package must be postmarked within 7 days of the original delivery date and returned postage paid to:Protect America, Inc. (PAI)

3800 Quick Hill Rd. Building 1-100

Austin, TX 78728.

This Agreement will not be canceled until the returned equipment is received at Protect America, Inc. Customer shall be required to provide proof of delivery if requested. A $79.00 restocking fee, debited from Customer's account submitted as part of this Agreement, shall be assessed on all returns. The initial term of this agreement shall be 3 years, commencing on the date product is delivered to Customer. Agreement will automatically continue for successive one-year renewal terms, as allowed by law, unless PAI receives a written notice of cancellation from customer via U.S. Mail or overnight mail postmarked at least sixty (60) days prior to the end of the initial term or any subsequent renewal term. Customer may be required to show proof of delivery. If you have any questions regarding our Return Policy, please contact us at 1-800-951-5111, Option 1 to speak to a representative.

The BBB nor the A.G. nor the news media will be able to help keep this company enforcing the terms of your contract with them.  They will almost certainly pursue you for the cancellation charge plus the returned equipment charge. Your seven day return window is l-o-n-g over. Be sure to think this over carefully.

No, I don't work for them and never have.
