TCF bank cancelled my check card on 08/09/2010 with NO PRIOR NOTICE for what they described through customer service as ATM abuse. According to them on 08/10/10 I had excessive overdrafts through the atm. This did happen, ONE TIME in more than two years with this company on 07/28/10. I went to buy milk for my kids at a grocery store and 12 days after this overdraft through the atm they cancel my card without calling or contacting me. $1390.00 was direct deposited 5 days after this overdraft. Customer service said i had to go to a branch and order a new card as their was nothing they could do about it, that a new card HAD to be issued, even after speaking to Susan N. the supervisor.Upon getting to a branch(in Buffalo, Mn.), the manager quickly re-activated my card, said that the reason they cancelled it was because i made an "empty envelope" deposit through the atm. Upon proving to her that I had actually had 3 personal checks in that envelope, she then said it was cancelled because I could not make 2 party deposits through the atm.So first i was lied to about HAVING to have a new card issued, then i was lied to about why they supposedly cancelled the card(excessive overdrafts) by customer service. Then at the branch the manager insisted i deposited an empty envelope(another lie), then swiftly gave another reason why(2 party check) when i proved it wasnt an empty envelope.
Also, this bank as recently as 07/29/2010 continues illegal practices of backing up higher amounts of checkcard usage and checks so that smaller items will bounce, even after checking online to make sure items have posted. when confronted in a branch located in Buffalo, Minnesota about having checked online to make sure one thing was posted before using the card for a smaller purchase, of which funds were available, the reply was "dont trust what it says online." Well what the heck is the online service for? The following are the dates and amounts of the overdrafts this bank has charged me. At the very minimum, 80% of these overdraft fees were charged to me after a larger amount was "backed up" to make the smaller amounts bounce, or it indicated online that the larger amounts had posted, then the overdraft fee would bounce the other amounts charged. I will go back only one year on here due to limited space. This is a crime. Starting most recently back;on 7/29/10-$70.00,7/21/10-$70.00,6/15/10-$70.00,6/14/10$140.00,4/28/10-$35.00,3/3/10-$35.00,3/2/10-$140.00,3/1/10-$35.00,.2/25/10-$35.00,2/24/10-$70.00,2/23/10-$105.00,2/15/10-$70.00,2/11/10-$70.00,2/3/10-$70.00,2/2/10-$35.00,1/28/10-$105.00,1/27/10-$70.00,1/26/10-$70.00,1/25/10-$70.00,1/5/10-$35.00,1/4/10-$35.00,12/31/09-$70.00,12/30/09-$35.00,12/29/09-$175.00,12/23/09-$35.00,12/7/09-$35.00,12/3/09-$70.00,11/25/09-$35.00,11/10/09-$35.00,11/6/09-$35.00,11/5/09-$70.00,11/4/09-$35.00,11/3/09-$175.00,10/28/09-$35.00,10/28/09-$35.00,10/23/09-$70.00,9/30/09-$35.00,9/29/09-$35.00,9/25/09-$35.00,9/24/09-$70.00,9/16/09-$70.00,8/4/09-$70.00. This is only in the past year. I could go back another year but dont have enough space. All these fees equal $2695.00 just in the last year. The majority of them because of TCF's tricky little ways of backing things up or posting, then "unposting." Then charging fees so anything else coming in gets a fee as well.
Additionally, I had identity theft through this bank on 06/14/2010 and virtually the EXACT same thing happened to me that happened to the guy on TCF National Bank Review/Rip Off Report # 233027. Tcf first told me a reversal would happen in three days, then up to 10 days, then after 10 days they said I needed to fax in a request and it would take 10 more days before my account gets reimbursed. Now somehow(and quite conveniently) the dates of these transactions are altered on TCF's online banking. I have direct deposit and it is a major hassle for my employer to switch locations as it is a local office that has payroll through a national headquarters or i would have quit TCF

I'd start by getting another bank. Insanity is in doing the same thing over again and expecting different results.

There's pretty much a standard banking code as well. If you deposit money through company checks, it should available in 2 business days. Those days are not counting weekends or federally recognized holidays. By company checks, that is if you work for a large institution such as a phone company, large courier service or fast food chain those are going to be trusted by the bank in 2 business days. If you get checks from a government or federal entity, those have at most 24 hour hold times "business hours."

If you cash personal checks and/or checks from different banks, those hold times vary between 5-10 business days.

Financial planning should dictate that you should always have at least a 10 day reserve of funds so that way there isn't overdraft charges.

I hate banks as much as the next guy, but I'm just another person in sheeps wool. Got to at least know the corrupt rules so that way there is no way of playing victim to the corruption.

tcf continues manipulation and excessive fees by improper posting of debits and deposit credits.

AUTHOR: steve - (United States of America)

This bank should be jailed for its practices. Since I filed the original report' they have continued charging overdraft fees and posting bogus balance amounts. TCF has charged me more than 10 % of my annual pay in overdraft fees, and it is not because i dont know how to balance a ledger. It continues to be their manipulation of false online reporting and date, deposit and posting redirection to ensure overdraft fees. In their favor, they reversed $175 in fees, and i appreciate that. They have not reversed the other $2500.00, and i dont appreciate that.

Can anyone please be of help in how to contact the Federal Reserve, or anyone else who can help me recover the fees this bank has taken from me due to fradulent practices? Maybe a lawyer who is not afraid to take on a large corporation?

I have 6 total kids and make less then $30,000 yearly. I need reimbursement of the more than 1/10th of my pay and dont know where to begin, sorta.

I promise people- maybe 3 of the overdraft fees were legitimate. They manipulate just before my direct deposits go in to make sure they get their money.

I will not stop, TCF, until you reverse the food you have taken out of my families mouth in full. Even the Minneapolis newspaper has uncovered your practices now. Again, I will not stop writing and contacting whomever i need to until I'm reimbursed.

bank replied

AUTHOR: steve - (United States of America)

Whoever the bank employee was that replied knows what i said is true. Most of the overdraft charges explained in the report were not even due to a checkcard as the person indicates. Its not me who needs to clean up their act. Its TCF bank and their misleading and probably illegal practices. I know personally at least 8 people they have done similiar practices to. All of which have switched banks.

not the fault of the bank

AUTHOR: coast - (USA)

The $2695 in penalties isn't due to the order they process the debits and checks. It is due to your abuse of your debit card. Your failure to use a check register is not the fault of the bank. Clean up your act.
