I had attended this school in March of '09. I was very skeptical because of how much the tuition is and how much in loans it would take to pay it. A sales rep told me that they would help me find work so that I can pay off my huge debt. I applied for loans & they had set me up with both Sallie Mae & Chase, Chase is another ripp off because their interest is $17/day and they basically want to keep you as a customer aka SLAVE so you can keep paying on your debt and never will see any changes with your payments.
Anyway, this school hires instructors that have little to no experience in the film industry and some were former students and current students themselves. The classrooms were freezing cold. The urinals were always broken and stinking and overflowing.
I was in midterms and they had pulled me out of class to tell me that they had stopped taking loans from my bank. I asked why and the response that I had gotten was "I don't know!" They wanted me to apply for more loans with a different bank, but with my bad credit and even with a co-signer I couldn't do it. So then I had to drop out.
I really hated how much the instructors who would always complain about how terrible student films are. It really annoyed me that they told us that for our thesis film and our short film in the 2nd month could be no longer than 10 minutes. That's another thing, in the 2nd month they want you to make a short film with "real" actors and before then you don't really get any teaching on how to direct them. When we did mine, our actors got really pissed with the director and producers and they were yelling and screaming because nobody knew how to direct them.
There was this one instructor who I was in script writing class with and she was really negative! Always talking about how bad students films are and how much she hated them and just an overall negative person. Me and some other guys would joke that we wanted to have angry sex with her, lol!!!
LAFS didn't help me find a job so I ended up going back to doing what I had done prior and I'm $60 grand in debt with the majority of my income going to pay on my debts.
I'm amazed that there wasn't any other rip off reports up here. There's a class action lawsuit on them, that seems like it's not going anywhere's. Don't go to this school thinking that you're going to direct Tom Cruise or anybody else like that or even that someone is going to give you $200 million for you to make a film.
I know that I can't speak for everyone, but my experience with this school was a really bad one. Don't even get me started on the liberals and Democrats that go here and become forceful with their beliefs and stuff!!!
This school did more than just ruin my credit, it ruined my life!!! If you're really interested in working in the film biz, take classes at a community college because all you're really eligible for after graduation is working as a PA or a gaffer or a prop master. But to be a producer, Director, or writer this isn't the place to go to.

LAF/RS is a choice vehicle for even the most novice of drivers.
AUTHOR: C.S. Oliver - (USA)
SUBMITTED: Sunday, June 21, 2015
In response to Anonymous’ Los Angeles Film School (LAF/RS) ‘Ripoff Report’ - submitted Thursday, April 25, 2013:
This correspondence is specifically for your eyes: whoever else happens upon this particular writing is of no significance to me, as your LAF/RS experience and subsequent ventilation is the subject of my reply.
Regardless of the strong possibility that you may never lay eyes upon these words (based on your tone, context, as well as the elapsed time since your writing), I will still entertain your grumbling.
A brief bit about my context: Retired U.S. Army (Infantry), Ex-Cop (ATL, GA), Ex-Firefighter/EMT/Rescue-Tech (West Annapolis, MD), Ex-Armed Security (Ft. Meade, MD), zero entertainment background prior to my admission to LAF/RS, current BS Film student in my 10th month (that would put me at about middle age).
One caveat: These words are based solely from my vantage, which is derived from what I happened to stumble upon – your recollection of your unfortunate experience. I am without the benefit of the Kessler group, their affiliates, or anybody (for that matter)….
I’ll address but a few observations…. You voiced bold and highly inaccurate statements regarding the quality of the institution, the expertise of its staff, as well as your ultimate demise, based on the aforementioned. Therefore, I strongly encourage you to revisit the terms; slander, research, and litigation. Please don’t feel threatened: rather, comforted that a random stranger would take the time to be concerned about your welfare.
It is not necessary for me to further defend LAF/RS, as its reputation speaks for itself (insert Google search here); but, I will say that, less than 1½ years later from your writing to the present, my experiences and those of my colleagues at LAF/RS are in stark contrast (I’m talkin’ at least 4 f-stops) to yours. Perhaps a couple more words to add among those to revisit should be attitude and determination (e.g., in response to a different complaint, “If I need tutoring, nothing [and I mean nothing] is going to stop me from being tutored”).
I am unaware of your overall motivation, but mine is not to throw you under a bus. However, there is a good bit of contradiction and/or exaggeration in your synopsis (e.g., financial credit liability, etc)….
One last note: In terms of Linda J. Cowgill’s “condescension” towards her students - hey buddy, the woman published the course’s book of study. Of course she has an opinion. Everyone knows that this is an ego-driven business. It is unavoidable as it is inherent. The key is to use other people’s egos to your advantage (e.g., siphon as much positive information as possible.) Good luck in your future endeavors….
