After an eye exam a Pupil Distance was requested. The response was " I can't give you that information because then you can buy glasses somewhere else." When asked again and a corporate complaint filed, the Vision Center manager called and said, "it's policy" yet nowhere in the policy copy given at the Vision Center or from Walmart prohibits the eye exam results that were paid for to be withheld. I received a call from the store manager of the Vision Center after I wrote a complaint to corporate and "Matt" said that I can come in and he will give me the Pupil Distance to complete the prescription. I declined as I want absolutely nothing to do with them, especially after reading the humongous amount of complaints against them for faulty eyeware made with the wrong prescription lenses or one eye good and the other not with both glasses, bifocals, progressives and contacts.
If anyone else has this problem, please let Rip Off Report know. The person who stated it was policy lied, the manager truthfully said "it's a rule" which means internally the employees are to try and get the customer to buy the glasses/contacts there. The web site documenting these complaints is available when you browse Walmart Vision Center.

wal mart and the Optical Center

As an 11 yr employee of WM, everyone doing business with any of the businesses located at the
front of WalMarts need to know this: ie; Optical shop, hair salon, MacDonalds, hearing aide store, etc. All these stores lease space from WM and are not controlled by WM in any way other than lease terms/problems. Problems encountered with any leased space stores within WM need to be handled with the managers of the individual store, NOT WALMART!

One question

Was this eye exam free? If you paid for it you should get it but if you just went in to get a free exam and refused to pay I can see why they wouldn't give it to you. Places that offer a free exam only give it free if you buy from them. You can't go get a free exam and than buy from 1-800-contacts. You can however have just an exam done and pay the normal price for it.
I suspect the missing pieces of the puzzle here are what I just mentioned.

They cannot withhold that information from you. That is your medical information. You have a legal right to it and the can not legally withhold it. To even suggest that they can is a violation.

Ugh Walmart Optical...

I've had nothing but bad experiences with Walmart Optical in California. I complained to corporate but like you refused to go back for more abuse. It's my understanding that when you pay for an eye exam that prescription belongs to you and the PD is part of that prescription if you ask for it.
But optical centers have for decades marked up frames ten fold if not more to make a bigger profit. My understanding is that this is Federal Law. Your eye health is contingent on that prescription that is your property after payment, whether they life it or not. Doesn't mean they won't lie to you, this industry has been keeping our eye care a secret society for a long long time.
