On Sunday, August 18, 2013 at approximately 5:00 p.m., I stopped to fill up my vehicle with gas at the Circle K gas station located at 2011 N. Lincoln Ave., Urbana, Illinois 61802.  The pump was pre-pay only, therefore, I pre-paid $35.00 in cash and went out to pump #4 to fill up my gas tank.  As you can see from the image attached, the pump was broken and though I clearly paid $35.00, I received only 4.834 gallons of gas.  In other words, I paid $7.24 per gallon.  I took a photo of the pump as there was only one person working behind the counter and there were approximately 10 customers in line and I knew the employee may not have time to run right out to the pump to see about correcting the issue.  When it was finally my turn, I explained the issue to the employee working.  Being that he was still busy, he asked another employee, (who had just walked in and stated, "It is only my second day"), to call the manager, Rachel.  The kind new employee called the manager despite being 'off the clock' and explained to me that the manager was on her way because, "She just had an issue like this and had to come in yesterday...".  The manager, Rachel, looked at the pump and proceeded to call the District Manager, Steve Bowers.  Upon conclusion of this phone call, Rachel told me that she was told by the District Manager, Steve Bowers, that they would have to shut down pump number 4 and could not refund my money, nor provide me with the gas I paid for until they investigated further.  I therefore paid for gas that was not provided after having waited for a resolution for an hour and a half.  I headed home (4 hours out of town with my 4.834 gallons of gas at $7.24 per gallon).  I should note that another customer, hearing this situation, left his coffee on the counter and exclaimed, "These people steal from customer's!  I will NEVER shop here again".  My next complaint will be with the Better Business Bureau and via word of mouth as I have yet to hear from anyone at Circle K despite having left my contact information with the Manager.  Please Note:  I do have an image of the pump as well that I was unable to attach here.  Please advise if there is a way to attach an image.  Thank you so much for any assistance and/or at least getting the word out so that this hopefully does not happen to someone else.

Faulty Display?

AUTHOR: jussjames - ()

POSTED: Monday, February 16, 2015

I would probably guess that the "10s" spot on the display was incorrect. I would further postulate that the gas price that day was 2.359. This is how I have come to this conclusion.

If you prepaid $35.00, and the display said "4.834" Gallons, your math would be correct at paying 7.24 a gallon. However, if you divide 35 by 14.834, it would come to exactly 2.359, which is an actual gas price.

I postulate that the digitial display either a. became partially unplugged due to people banging on the grade selectors, or b. the display was sunworn or otherwise damaged. Further, if you pumped gas for more than 30 seconds, I guarantee that you got more than 5 gallons of gas.

If you would have asked for a new receipt after the gas was pumped, I almost guarantee that it would have listed 14.834 Gallons. Gallons do not usually show on initial receipts due to the gas not being pumped yet, grade selection, etc. Finally, I would think you would notice, especially if you have a larger vehicle, that your gas gauge moved quite a bit more than what 11.4 gallons would have provided.

Hopefully after a year and a half, this will have helped calm you. Thank you.
