I hired Chris Van Emmerik, from Van Emmerik Custom Homes to build my house. The following content is my experience and/or opinions of having dealt with him.

Chris Van Emmerik did not care about my budget.  Our contract specifically indicated the builder was to get all costs preapproved by us.  Van Emmerik Custom Homes did not do that.  Instead I found Chris Van Emmerik approving costs and then sending me bills!

Chris Van Emmerik did not build my home to plans and specifications.  Our contract specifically indicated the builder was to build the residence to Plans and Specifications.  Van Emmerik Customers did not do that.  Instead I found home plans were not followed, and when I showed Chris Van Emmerik that plans were not followed, he indicated he had gotten verbal approval from me for the "change".  Although, every "change" cost me money, this one for some reason didn't cost me any. Additionally, according to our agreement, he needed to get every "Change Order" executed in writing, however, no such change order exists. 

Chris Van Emmerik was lazy when he built my home.  Our agreement indicated he needed to prepare bid packages and evaluate the bids.  Often times, I found myself doing the work.  The agreement indicated he must obtain a minimum of 3 bids, on occasion he would even forget that requirement within our agreement. 

Chris Van Emmerik was incredibly incompetent with my home project.  Chris Van Emmerik does not check to make sure each of the subcontractors is licensed.  Our agreement specifically asked him to ensure that each subcontractor was licensed.  He failed to do that!

Chris Van Emmerik doesn't give a darn about managing our construction site.  We were to get a dedicated supervisor on our jobsite daily per our agreement.  He assigned himself as the dedicated supervisor.  He would often arrive late / leave early / or not show up at all!  Our agreement indicated clearly that he should have someone onsite daily, we paid for it, but didn't receive that.  He continued to get full compensation however.

Chris Van Emmerik doesn't want the truth to come out. I gave Van Emmerik Custom Homes a chance to resolve all issues before I go public with my reviews.  Instead they are trying to prohibit me from exercising my constitutional right to free speech.  They filed an emergency motion to prohibit me from making public comments.

Sorry Van Emmerik Custom Homes.  I have the right to free speech and I am going to exercise it. 

To sum it all up, proceed with serious caution.  In my case, this builder didn't give a squat when it came to respecting the terms of our agreement and frankly would rather spend more time in trying to get me to shut up versus helping the home owner resolve all the issues at the house.

My honest and unfiltered recommendation - run from Van Emmerik Custom Homes and save yourself the stress and the money.
