I just reviewed my credit report today intending on trying to clean up and raise my credit score.  When I see a derogatory mark from 11 Charter Communications/Spectrum TV from 2017.  I've lived at my current residence since 2015 and the bill for cable/direct tv has only been in my name since 2018.

So, it couldn't possibly be owed by me.  Cable and all of these services are such a total rip off where they give you discounts to join, then the fee escalates greatly over time & services are interupted by the "unknown".  If you try to call customer service plan on spending hours on the phone being transferred and repeatedly providing the current situation with people outside of the country with heavy accents.

It's Probably Valid

AUTHOR: Jim - (United States)

POSTED: Monday, January 27, 2020

The problem with the sequence of events in your narrative is that it sounds like you had cable in the house at one point along the way.  Now, you make it sound as if there was cable in the house prior to the installation of the DTV Satellite.

The problem is that often - the setup requires more than one person on the account.  Even if you were never on the account, then it is still possible the primary told Spectrum that you were now the account holder, since you were living there.

You may wish to check and find out whether this person who was in the house and on the account - did you wrong and put your name on the account after they left?  It is certainly a possibility and I've seen people wrongly transfer their outstanding bills to their kids, their exes, and anyone else you can think of.

There's another thing here to consider - and this is from a credit repair perspective.  Disputing the bill with the CRA's may take some time to resolve, assuming you'd be successful in getting it removed.  It stinks, but depending on how much it is, you may wish to pay it off and get the bad mark off.  Of course, if this really isn't yours, then the right thing to do is dispute it with the CRA's.

Why Not?

I've lived at my current residence since 2015 and the bill for cable/direct tv has only been in my name since 2018.
- First off DirectTv is NOT cable so putting them together shows you may actually have had Cable at one time. You lived in the house since 2015 and didn't have DirectTV until 2018. So yes it is quite conceiveable to have had cable, if not what did you use between 2015 & 2018?

Cable and all of these services are such a total rip off where they give you discounts to join, then the fee escalates greatly over time & services are interupted by the "unknown"
- What does this have to do with a bill that is not yours?

Seems like there may be more to your story than you are telling us.

Response to unsolicited ignorant comment

AUTHOR: Elizabeth - (United States)

If I wanted your opinion, I would’ve asked. My complaint is valid and was directed toward the company who dinged my credit, not open for your comment. I believe I am taking the necessary steps to dispute this. Evidently you have "issues” and clearly have the time to review web comments and spew nonsense, I’d suggest you explore other venues and refrain from using up my air.

The point flew right over your simple head. The point being that whether it’s cable or satellite they all monopolize geographic areas, they all provide lousy service, transferring all over the world and having people.

Why Then The Commentary?

AUTHOR: Momo - (United States)

POSTED: Friday, January 24, 2020

If there is wrong info on your credit report there is a simple process to dispute it. You say this collection info is in error and you claim to not have had cable. If this is true, why the commentary about how bad they allegedly are?

You simply dispute it using the procedure as per the bureau and that's the end of it! Go ahead, write back something stupid like "you must work for them"!
