In January of 2011 I purchased two female Singapura kittens from Karen Hill's Beautymus Cattery in NC. I specifically asked her for two sisters from the same family. When they arrived in a kennel at the O'Hare Airport in April 2011, my partner and I picked them up. I noticed they looked different. One is bigger than the other and their date of births were different. Karen explained to me that their parent is the same but the other is different. I was upset but happy to get the kittens. I took them to the vet to have them checked. The vet said that the smaller one, Dixie, had an eye infection. They gave us medication for it. I went to Montana for a few days. My partner found Dixie limp on the floor so he rushed her to the ER. Her blood sugar was very low. They put her on IV fluids. The next day she went into seizure. Karen did not tell us that Dixie's siblings died from FIP. Mike spent thousands of dollars for Dixie's vet care in ICU.

They decided to put Dixie down and we requested an autopsy. It tested positive for FIP. We only had Dixie for 3 weeks. She was very tiny. I don't know her exact DOB. I've repeatedly asked Karen for her DOB. She changed their DOB's several times. The other one, Seymour, slowly started to get sick, too. She stopped eating and we started to feed her from a syringe. The vet gave us meds. Then she started to breathe laboriously. The vet believed that she got FIP, too.

Karen told me to send Seymour back to her and she'll nurse her back to good health but the vet said that she was too sick to be flown back to NC. We decided to put her down and we requested an autopsy for her, too. It tested positive for FIP. So we only had Seymour 3 weeks after Dixie's passing.

Karen Hill gave us our money back but she wouldn't reimburse us for $3,000 vet bills. I copied all the papers and tried to sue her for vet bill reimbursement but it's a local thing so I had to get an attorney in NC to sue her. She was very dishonest with me. I've repeatedly asked her for their info and date of births. She had not done it. She has not proved herself to be trustworthy.

I knew another woman who purchased a sick kitten from Karen Hill. She lives in Rockford, IL. She spent $5,000 to take her tiny sick kitten for blood transfusions. I told her what happened to my kittens and then she realized that her kitten may be sick with FIP so she mentioned it to the vet so she had some fluid drawn from her stomach and it was sticky and yellow which is indicative of FIP. Karen Hill never told Laura that her kitten may have FIP until I told her what happened to my kittens.

We believe that Karen Hill is conducting unsafe breeding practices and continuing to sell sick kittens. Karen Hill should be removed from the cat breeders' list and the state of North Carolina should investigate her and put her Singapura breeding out of business.

Do not buy Singapura kittens from Karen Hill!

AUTHOR: Mary - ()

POSTED: Tuesday, October 29, 2013

I know two more people that bought sick Singapura kittens from Karen Hill so that's a total of five people I know! They also died from FIP, too! Karen Hill was very dishonest with me since she changed their date of birth's several times! She should stop breeding Singapuras! Other Singapura breeders are angry with her for continuing to breed sick Singapuras and selling them so they refuse to do any business with her!

I had a very different experience...

I came across the above report after I also lost a Singapura kitten purchased from Karen Hill.  I hadn't known much about this rare breed of cat when I first got them, but have learned a lot in the past few months.

In May 2013, I purchased two Singapura kittens from Karen Hill (Beautymus Cattery) and had a very different experience as that described above.  I also had the unfortunate experience of one kitten dying shortly after arrival - only 18 days after I got her.  Although Velcro was very tiny (weighed only 22 ounces at 17 weeks), she appeared healthy - was playful and eating with no problems.  I had my vet check her out and she got a clean bill of health.  Several weeks after she arrived, Velcro simply stopped eating, and despite emergency treatment, died 3 days later.  Because of my concerns about FIP, I had a complete necropsy with histopathology done on her.  The cause of death proved to be bacterial meningitis and encephalitis - something that is rare, likely precipitated by an undeveloped immune system, and apparently, is completely unpredictable.  There was no indication whatsoever of corona virus, PKD, or FIP.  During that time, I also extensively discussed the inbreeding and consequent health problems of Singapura cats with researchers at the University of California Davis - who are conducting genetic studies of Singapuras.  I had stayed in close communication with Karen Hill and Elizabeth Bolen at the cattery during those difficult days.

Karen Hill was as responsive, knowledgable, and supportive as I could have hoped for.  She has now replaced Velcro with another Singapura kitten (including paying transport costs to California) and Daphne at present is healthy, playful, eating heartily and growing like a weed.  She also reimbursed me for medical expenses I'd incurred.  The brother of the kitten who died is nearly 9 months old now.  Goliath is healthy, happy, and has bonded with his new "sister."

From my perspective, in this difficult situation, Karen Hill acted with complete integrity and professionalism.  To me, she seems very knowledgable and sincerely caring about this amazing breed of cat - which has known health problems resulting from severe inbreeding.  I have lost my heart to this amazing breed and my heart aches for those who have also lost a Singapura kitten, but I was happy to discover a breeder who seems to truly care about the cats she breeds and sells.
