I turned right on a yellow light in Beaverton Oregon.  I was suprised to find a $260 ticket in the mail, stating that the light was red for .33 seconds when I entered the intersection and 11mph below the posted speed.

I told the judge I feel it is unfair to ticket me for less time than a blink on an eye, and he told me that he could only consider the fact that it was me in that car in the photos.  I went to City Council to discuss the matter there, where I met an electrical engineer with the same complaint, only he had solid proof that the red light timers were off by up to .5 seconds.

The city is charging people based on as little as .1 second, but their timers are off by up to .5 second.  I want a refund, and I want the City of Beaverton to allow a grace period of .5 seconds to make up for the varying degree of timing on their lights.  They refuse- and with good reason- they make a LOT of money ticketing citizens like myself.

"There have been many instances where cities in the US have been found to have too-short yellow-light intervals at some intersections where red light cameras have been installed. In Tennessee, 176 drivers were refunded for fines paid after it was discovered that the length of the yellow was too short for that location, and motorists were caught running the light in the first second of the red phase. In California, a combined total of 7603 tickets were refunded or dismissed by the cities of Bakersfield, Costa Mesa, East LA, San Carlos, and Union City, because of too-short yellows."

Get over it?!

I am new to ripoff reports, and no I don't intend to post the proof here.  If you are someone who can help my cause, I opted to allow contact from you.  I'll happily share the evidence that has been gathered.

Yeah it's a lesson learned, but the City of Beaverton is ripping people off.  I am not  a sheep who will just roll over and take it without a fuss when I feel I am being treated unfairly by the officials I should be able to trust.  I have to pay the ticket, but I feel it is unfair that they charge people based on less than .5 second.  Literally the blink of an eye made the difference- and the bottom line is that I got a ticket for running a red light, when I safely turned right an an intersection at a yellow light.

Yes, even if the timers hadn't been proven wrong, I would be complaining.  I think the City of Beaverton needs to allow a grace period of .5 second.  The public works manager made a report himself that showed that the timing varies- they have been shown proof that their timers are off. I am sure they have heard all the other stories, including the one done on them: http://www.kgw.com/news/Unit-8-investigates-Beaverton-red-light-cameras-223057031.html

In spite of all of this, they continue to charge people based on as little as .1 second.  It's not right, and I'm just one of many who ended up having to pay for it.  This is why I made the report, I hope to find others that feel they have an unfair ticket from Beaverton.  I hope they will join those of us who are taking our time and energy to attend and speak out at the City Council Meetings on Tuesdays.

First of all why are you fighting a red-light camera when you were making a right hand turn?  Was this intersection a no turn on red?

It is also interesting and shows why people generally only post things that are favorable to them.  You stated you were going 11 MPH under the speed limit.  Well were you making the turn at a leisurely 4MPH in a 15MPH zone or screaming around the corner at 34MPH in a 45MPH zone.  Also, how about the identifying information on the picture you posted?  Such as the light information, speed, etc.

Why is this important, well for one reason it can show intent.  After all unless you can convince someone you have such a percise concept of time, you can not say that you knew you had exactly .17 seconds longer than you did and that is why you made the turn.  So it could show you had no intention of stopping.

But regardless of that you have some Electrical Enginner that says the lights are off up to .5 seconds...okay how about the specific light you were caught at?   Do you have proof that the specific light you got caught at was .5 seconds off?  Out of curiosity what if it was found to be short by only .1 seconds, would you still be complaining?  How about .25?  How about .32 Seconds?

I believe that exposing your Ripoff Report on the worldwide web was a good idea. A Harvard Business Professor told his class of executives in late 2004 that exposure is a corporation's worst fear.

You can type in 269041 at this site and scroll down to the consumer comment entitled "Blame it on a Lawyer" at Ripoff Report #269041 and read more of what the good professor said to his class of executives in late 2004.

The internet is allowing anyone to expose the things that are wrong in this country and in other countries all over the world. I believe it is wrong that you, and others, are being penalized for faulty red light timers. Feel free to send copies of your Ripoff Report to all of your Local TV News stations in your city. Put it to the attention of 'Investigative Reporter'. Maybe one of them will contact you and do a story on TV in order to provide more awareness to this problem in your town.

Good luck to you, and make sure to spread your Ripoff Report all over the web at sites like Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr!
