On April 8, 2020 at 9:08 PM CST, I received an email from Discover telling me that they closed my credit account. I was confused and concerned. I was a Discover cardholder since 2008 and have never been late on a payment. On April 9, 2020 at 9:33 PM CST, I called the number listed on the email to find out exactly why my account was closed and to try to get the decision reversed based on my length of account and perfect payment history.

I spoke to a representative in Utah who told me that they closed my account due to non-use, which was the main factor. The last time I made a payment to pay my card off in full was September 2019, so it hadn't been used in 7 months. I pleaded with the representative and reminded them about my history with the bank and never missing a payment. The representative was apathetic and told me that they can't reverse the decision.

I explained that there have been several periods during the last 12 years where I have gone much longer without any card use and never had this happen before. The representative would only say that their non-usage periods change. At the end of the call, the representative said that I could re-apply. This made no sense to me because I already was approved and had the account for 12 years plus it would drop my score for unnecessarily going through the entire process again.

I have other credit cards with other companies and I have received notifications in advance about non-use and that I would need to use the card soon to avoid account closure. Discover should have done this, especially if the non-use period keeps changing. Discover has effectively wiped $15,300 worth of available credit which will tank my credit score for no good reason. We are in the middle of a pandemic and with the uncertainty of everything going, the last thing you want to do is close the account of a customer who was responsible with their credit and never missed a payment.

All I am asking for is that my credit account and line be restored as it shouldn't have been closed. I also want Discover to do the responsible thing and notify customers when they are approaching their arbitrary non-use time limit which would avoid all of this in the first place.

Don't Deny Your Entitlement

All of the above statements represent an entitlement you feel you have in one form or another.  So don't come here and claim you aren't or don't feel entitled.  You are - and that's fine.  Just don't deny you aren't.

Here's the problem:  Credit card companies may, at their discretion, choose to close your account for no reason; this is all part of the agreement you signed oh so many years ago.  You think that since you have a responsible history (gee, I forgot that entitlement statement), you should not have your credit with the card company revoked.  Doesn't work that way because it is their money their lending you through the issuance of credit.  Also since no one has defined what a "responsible credit history" means, it's a meaningless term due to its subjectivity.

Yes, I suppose it's true some credit cards will send you notifications for whatever reason.  So what?  It isn't a requirement.  What you need to keep in mind is that if a credit card revokes your account, then it means the company no longer wants you as a customer.  I mean I've never been a huge fan or Discover; their rates are slightly higher to merchants than a VISA/MC card would be - so a lot of merchants won't take Discover cards as a whole.  Also, I would make absolutely certain in the future - to use a CC at least once per month.

So what to do?  I guess for starters, I wouldn't complain about your credit score.  If you've gone several months without using your credit, and you still have a good credit score, then your credit score is too high anyway.  A good credit score is one that's used regularly and paid off regularly.  Sinceyou admit you've gone several months often without use, so that needs to stop.  Living like Dave Ramsey has MANY limitations.

Thanks for your unconstructive criticisim. Sounds like you work for Discover. I don't feel entitled at all. What I do think is that if other companies have the decency to give their customers a head up about arbitrary rules, then Discover can do the same. Again, why do you care and why do you think it was worth all that time to rebut something that wasn't meant for you? My goal is to make other aware of their practices so they can make the decision of whether they are willing to do business with someone who does stuff like this. Apparently, this site is bringing out trolls and fanboys.

Entitled Much

The way you wrote this RipOff report you would think that this was your money. This is their money that they are allowing you to borrow under certain terms. Discover like every other credit card has the right to close your account out at any time and for any reason. Just like they have the right to increase your credit limit at any time and for any reason. What does this mean, that even if you did use your card they could have decided to close it.

And yes this is what YOU agreed to when you applied for this card and EVERY card you have.

For what ever reason they feel that your available credit is too much of a risk for them. Perhaps there are trends in your other credit cards that is causing this. Perhaps they are reevaluating their criteria.

Discover should have done this, especially if the non-use period keeps changing. Discover has effectively wiped $15,300 worth of available credit which will tank my credit score for no good reason.
- Since this card was paid off the only reason this would affect your credit severly is if you had high usage on your other credit cards and you were relying on this card to keep your  overall credit utilization low.

If this 15K card was your highest limit card, by a significant amount, perhaps your limit was out of sync with what it should be compared to your other cards. If you have other cards with equivalent limits then again unless you had high utilization this card being closed will not have a major impact.

We are in the middle of a pandemic and with the uncertainty of everything going, the last thing you want to do is close the account of a customer who was responsible with their credit and never missed a payment.
- And on the flip side, you were never in the middle of a pandemic either. Perhaps your 15K of available credit was too much of a risk for them in these uncertain times. After all just because you made your payments in the past doesn't mean you will make your payments now. The Bankruptcy courts are filled with people who had decades of perfect payments and then ran into issues.

This made no sense to me because I already was approved and had the account for 12 years plus it would drop my score for unnecessarily going through the entire process again.
- Are you getting a house in the next month or two? How about a car? How about any major purchase? If not then the minor drop of a few points a credit inquiry will cause would be negated in a few months. Reapplying likely will allow them to review your credit report at a deeper level, and if you have solid credit you shouldn't worry. If your credit isn't the best, then perhaps you may have found another reason why they closed your account.  Although if you do apply and are approved, you will likely not see anything close to the 15K credit limit you had.
