We got hooked by one of those "Do you know the Government is giving money away to help home owners install solar?" calls. We'd actually, already, been thinking about it so we had a salesman come out and do a presentation. He was nice enough, as was his supervisor who came out later. However, really, it was all about getting the sale.

Typical sales pressure - if you buy today we can do this price, but if you take a millisecond to think about it the price will go up. That SHOULD have been a red flag right there - our bad.

The package was $16, 300 for solar water heating, duct inspection, repair and sealing, and radiant barrier installation. No money down, no interest for a year (and no interest if we paid within tha year).

Three separate installers came (one group for each part of the contract). VERY average workers. They were goign to place the solar panels in a very stupid position and my wife had to really argue with them to put them where we wanted (yes, and it was a logical south facing roof face where we wanted them).

Typical messy contractors - left loose insulation all over the house, black smudges on anythign they could touch. In the garage they had to cut a hole in the ceiling to get in to run pipes. First one they cut in the wrong place so had to cut a second. The drywaller they had come to repair it came clear across Phoenix to us (well over an hour's drive) for 4 smallish patches and would have had to return the next day to paint them. We felt sorry for him and repainted the patches ourselves.

But wait, there's more... worse. We'd only recently moved into the house. When they installed the system, they had to put in a second HW tank - an electric - to run the solar water into. After the installation we discovered we were on gas water - no one mentioned this at any time.

We were pretty upset at the whole deal. We spoke to the owner of Discover (and Paniolo Builders - JD Dinsmore) specifically about the mess they left us with and he promised to send us a $100 gift card for the inconvenience. Surprise, surprise, it never arrived.

Use these people if you like:

1. High pressure sales

2. Salesman who love the sale (but not a lot else)

3. Sloppy workers who seem to care little for your home

4. A business owner who cannot follow through

5. Zero after sales service

We completely recommend you avoid them at all costs. Something else that should have been a huge red flag. Slicck, but cheesy website - http://discoverenergysolutions.com/ - that is minimal in contact, and completely lacking in address and phone number - it just screams SCAMMER! Even their building contractor website is equally lacking in contact info - http://tequabuilders.com/ or www.PanioloBuilders.com - yes they have a few names. Google them all and see what comes up.
